Over the weekend we learned that Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin got into a fight with wide receiver Curtis Drake, and that the fight had some scary consequences. Not only was McGloin knocked unconscious during the fight, but he also suffered a seizure and had to be hospitalized for a brief period.

McGloin has since returned to the team, and on Monday he took full responsibility for the fight with Drake.

"I'm willing to take full responsibility -- it was my fault," McGloin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I started it, but as a quarterback for this university, I should be held to a higher standard. It should not have happened. I should've walked away from it.

"It was just two guys who are emotional about the game, who got into an argument."

McGloin said that the fight consisted of a few punches being exchanged, and that he slipped and hit his head on the concrete floor, which knocked him unconcious. McGloin also said that he had yet to speak to Drake since the incident.

As for how this will affect Penn State in its bowl game, McGloin has not yet been cleared to practice and failed a concussion test on Sunday. Interim head coach Tom Bradley said both players will face internal discipline, but also that he doesn't plan on naming a starter at quarterback before the bowl game. Penn State's other option is Rob Bolden, but Bolden is in a bit of hot water himself.

According to Bradley, Bolden was part of a "prank gone awry" and was cited for stealing a bottle of Gatorade from a convenience store on Friday. Though Bradley also said that Bolden's incident won't have any effect on his playing time.

"Leadership" or "snitches get stitches?"

I have mixed emotions here.  Is one of the current crop of PSU QB's actually showing leadership skills, or is he just following the "code" of the street?  Maybe PSU's best option is to have Bolden run the wildcat.  They could tell him the ball is gatorade and the guys in the other uniforms are convenience store security guards.

At any rate, this crop of PSU players deserved better than what they got this year.  I hope whoever the new coach turns out to be is able to pick up the pieces.  If not, a weak PSU will bring down the quality of the Big Ten, much like a weak Michigan did after Lloyd Carr gutted their roster.

If the Big Ten wants to compete with the SEC, they need PSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wiscy, and Iowa to all be top-notch programs.   Truthfully, though, I wouldn't mind if Ohio State was terrible for ten years to make up for their ten years of cheating.

McGloin says fight was his fault

As someone who lives in PA, hates Penn State, and likes Miami, I have taken my fair share of abuse over the years.  I've heard it all, every Penn State fan trashing Miami because they are "thugs", "felons", "criminals", etc.  I've heard all of the praises of the "Legend of JoePa" to the point where I could puke.  No matter what, Penn State fans have stayed loyal in their usual misguided way.  Even after the rumors started becoming public, I heard the "innocent until proven guilty" rhetoric that is usually the mantra of a group on the defensive.  Through it all, Penn State fans remained loyal.  Now that JoePa has admitted that he "waited too long" to inform his superiors because he didn't want to interfere with their weekends, I'm still shocked at the number of loyal Penn State fans that are still chirping.  I have to say, they are dwindling.

So now we have three "thugs" or "criminals" that will be dealt with "internally".  I have waited a long time for this program to topple from the pedestal.  Never in my wildest dreams was it ever this bad.  As a fan of college football, I am disgusted and saddened by Penn State and its followers.  Who gives a crap who beat who this season?  Wins and losses aside, Penn State has become the laughing stock of the nation, let alone the college world.  Quite frankly, it seems like it was a road they paved for themselves.

McGloin says fight was his fault

McGloin, Drake, and Boldin all should be suspended.  Boldin indefienately, McGloin and Drake for at least a quarter or a half.  Bradley is an idiot.  JoPa isn't high on everyone's list of good people, but  players wouldn't be suiting up for him after shoplifting.   Just saying...

Players fight all the time on all teams. The only reason it is in the news is because its Penn State. You don't suspend players for a fight among teammates after a practice.

Maybe, but when a guy goes unconscious with a seizure it's going to get a little more scrutiny regardless of where it's at.

So let's paraphrase this... interpretation, I have some intelligence and let this idiot beat the hell out of me... you could expect this from a receiver but not the QB.

He obviously hit enough receivers to beat THE Ohio State University in Columbus this year.
