After being linked with many of the higher profile FBS job vacancies this offseason, Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones has decided to firm up his commitment to the Bearcats. Jones and school have agreed to terms on a contract extension that will extend through the 2017 season.

"I think in the next couple of days we'll be able to announce something," Jones said after Monday's bowl practice. "We say we're building the best college football program in America. We have a great thing here. There's a lot of excitement here."

Jones has reportedly been working with athletic director Whit Babcock on a new contract for several weeks. The term sheet has been signed, but the contract still must be approved by the Board of Trustees. The Bearcats are currently preparing to play Vanderbilt in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 in Memphis.

Jones helped lead the Bearcats on a five-win turnaround in his second season after a disappointing 4-8 finish in 2010. With their win over Connecticut in the regular season finale, Cincinnati earned a share of their third Big East conference title in four years. Jones' impressive turnaround earned him Big East Coach of the Year honors, as well as some attention from other programs looking for a new coach. The second-year Cincinnati coach was contacted by North Carolina, Illinois, and UCLA regarding their open coaching positions, but Jones never expressed serious interest in any of the opportunities.

"I believe in what we're building," Jones explained. "I think there's so many great things to building a successful football program and not just a successful team. We have great practice facilities now. We're in a conference that we can be extremely competitive in, we have a great fan base. We've got a great place to attract the top-caliber student athletes to."

Before departing for the Notre Dame position, Brian Kelly led the Bearcats to three straight 10+ win seasons from 2007-2009. With a win over Vanderbilt in the bowl game on New Years Eve, Jones will have Cincinnati back at the 10-win mark for the fourth time in five years.

I just read in a Dodd article about the Big-12 being a big money maker.  Basically, Big-12 teams can expect to earn $20 million plus from media rights, and probably more after 2014-15.  I think BE currently has a payout of around $10 million per school.  With Boise St, Houston, and SD State coming in, Cincy and Louisville will travel as much, and maybe more than WVU will in the Big-12.  So if you must travel, why not go where the money is good?  The Big East will still struggle for respect and if the BCS does away with AQ bids then what?  The western schools won't need the BE anymore and will likely look to move out, plus the ACC will likely come raiding again when they are ready to go to 16 members.  Long term, the Big East is in serious trouble on several fronts.  I think it's also a real possibility that the catholic schools will get sick of football and break away.

I will agree that i have really only had issues with the younger fans.  The older WV fans seem to be polite and knowledgeable.  Big East football is currently better off (on the field).  WV has had success but overall what have Cuse and Pitt done lately?????  I'll take the 5 we got over those 3 for sure.  You may be right however that it may not be sustainable.  I guess we'll see.  For cincy, wherever we go I just hope we stay with Louisville.

Boooo!  99.99% of the bad rep WVU fans get are caused by the actions of drunken idiots, most of whom are students.  Don't buy into the hype.  The truth is I feel bad for the schools we are leaving behind.  I don't think Big East football is viable long term.  It's very unfortunate, and I hope it doesn't play out that way, but my gut tells me the Big East will not survive as a football conference if the BCS status quo and conference realignment continues.  I'd like to see Louisville and Cincy taken by the Big 12, maybe even Rutgers.

I can't be certain but is this a WV fan actually being cordial to an opposing team?  Is it cold in hell today?

Butch Jones is a heck of a nice guy and a good coach.  I was pulling for him to take over for Rich Rod back in 2007.  I'm glad to see him stay off the coaching carousel and stick with the Bearcats.  I'd even like to see him lead Cincy into the Big 12 sometime down the road.  Good in the Liberty Bowl to all you Bearcats out there.
