Hawaii
has reportedly hired widely renowned college and NFL assistant coach Norm Chow as its new head coach.

According to a report by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Chow has emerged as the Warriors' top choice out of a pool of three finalists which is likely to have included former Arizona State head coach Dirk Koetter. Athletic director Jim Donovan has reportedly been "authorized" by Hawaii officials to work out a contract with the current Utah athletic director.

Chow, 65, is a Honolulu native who began his coaching career at BYU in 1973 and spent 26 seasons with the Cougars before stints as an offensive coordinator at N.C. State, USC, the Tennessee Titans and UCLA as well as Utah. While at USC he won the 2002 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant and played a major role in building the Trojans' national championship- and Heisman-winning offenses.

According to the Star-Advertiser report, an official announcement on Chow's hire could come as soon as Thursday.

oriental only refers to inaminate objects like a rug or a vase, never a person.

This is a false statement.  My job takes me to China and Japan at least once a year, the elder statesmen in these areas always use the term Oriental when describing people in their region.  Because someone at Cal-Berkely deemed that it can only be a rug or a vase?

Report: Norm Chow hired as new Hawaii coach

After all of these years as an assistant, and constantly being mentioned for just about every head coaching vacancy for years, Chow finally gets his chance.  It could not have been a better choice for him.  He is a Honolulu Native.  This will be his last coaching job.  He certainly will bring the offense that hawaii fans are used to seeing.  I do not believe that he was at Utah long enough to get his offense in gear, and we all know what a fiasco UCLA was, under Neuheisel.  He will have to win 7 games in 2012 to become bowl eligable because Hawaii has two FCS teams scheduled.  In a rather odd twist, his first game as a head coach will come at the stadium that he achieved his greatest success at, opening at the Coliseum in Los Angeles against USC.

Sorry Norm! You seem to be a nice dude, but your recent stints as offensive co-ordinator have been pathetic, at best. However my man; I wish you the best and a return to the islands ain't all that bad! Just win 6 games for the Warriors and get a bowl berth and life will be grand. Too bad you couldn't somehow coax a decent performance out of your Utah offense this year.

I don’t know if it was his fault or not, but he should have been a head coach long ago. I don’t know if he was comfortable just being an offensive coordinator/Assistant coach or he was typed cast as such.

Hawaii is getting a tremendous coach with an admirable resume. He should hire an offensive coordinator, however, he would probably want to be the offensive coordinator himself.

This could not  have happened to a better coach in the entire world. I have been a fan of  coach Chow since he was at BYU, recruiting unknown quarterbacks turning them into top rated and high NFL draft picks.

When he was hired to be the offensive coordinator at SC, I was more than glad of that situation. We all see the number of quarterbacks he influenced while there.

The word everyone is trying to find is American. Coach Chow is an American.

Oriental? Asian American? Are you guys serious? This conclusion was based on what? His last name? I'd laugh if I thought you meant it as a joke, but I know you didn't.

I'm just glad Arizona decided to hire that Mexican, er...Latin American Rich Rodriguez as a head coach too.

In all seriousness, you will be missed Coach. Yes, Utah's offense was porous, but it wasn't Chow's fault there was not a QB to back up Wynn. Chow did a great job at using the players that he had to do just enough to get wins. That is the sign of a good coach.

Could not have heard any better news today. His offense sucked this year and was a bit stell. Very glad they hired Whittingham over him back when he was too good for Utah.
