They may have only won a total of 12 games in the last two seasons, but that lack of success hasn't done much to change the bottom line for the Texas Longhorns. Forbes has released its list of the most valuable college football programs in the country and, to no surprise, Texas is once again at the top of the list.

Forbes estimates that the program is worth $129 million.
Texas’ total value is driven largely by a football profit of $71 million last season, up from $65 million in 2009. Texas football generated $96 million in revenue, $36 million of which came from ticket sales. Another $30 million was comprised of contributions tied to amenity seating like club seats and luxury suites. The Longhorns also benefited from $10 million worth of sponsorship deals, with Coca-Cola, Nike and PepsiCo’s Gatorade giving a combined $2 million last year.
What is somewhat surprising, however, is that number doesn't even include the revenue from the school's new Longhorn Network. No, those numbers won't be included until next year, so I'm going to go out on a limb right now and predict that Texas will once again be considered the most valuable football program at the end of 2012 as well.

Yeah, that's right. I said it. I'm putting myself out there.

Here's the top ten schools listed with their estimated value.

1. Texas ($129 million)
2. Notre Dame ($112 million)
3. Penn State ($100 million)
4. LSU ($96 million)
5. Michigan ($94 million)
6. Alabama ($93 million)
7. Georgia ($90 million)
8. Arkansas ($89 million)
9. Auburn ($88 million)
10. Oklahoma ($87 million)

Texas is the most valuable football program

They are counting the dollars collected from attendance, not the number of fools who go to the games.  Perhaps if an Ohio State education provided for better job prospects, they could charge more for their tickets and actually crack the top 10 on this list.  If they counted the value of all the money collected under the table from the players and the drugs sold by the boosters out of their tattoo parlours, you may have a point.  And do us all a favor and drop that annoying "the", it just makes you look even more stupid than you actually are.

And maybe it is a goone sign for the rest of you that despites the advantage in revenue, Texas isn't producing championship teams lately. The football program is still digging out from some terrible recruiting classes and the basketball program never seriously competes for the Final Four because theur star players turn pro too soon. So, file this away in the "money isn't everything" department. Wouldn't you rather be Florida or Alanama or LSU?

Texas is the most valuable football program

Um, the article says ticket sales, which is obviously based on attendance, so it is included.

Texas is the most valuable football program

You can have quality teams across all sports, but if their aren't enough butts in seats then your just not profitable.  Doesn't hurt that Texas has a strong Brand as well.  Sponsors line up for these guys.

Texas is the most valuable football program

I can not believe the Florida did not make it. I feel like with quality baseball, basketball and football progams they would have an advantage. Also I wonder where UConn is on this list with a top women's programs.

Texas is the most valuable football program

What about Arkansas makes them valuable?   And on top of that, more valuable than the likes of OSU, Florida, USC, etc.
Attendance and revenue.  Next.
