Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012.  Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

Wow, who is advising this guy? A top 5 pick in the NFL draft and he is going to risk his health and play another season of college football. Ask Jake Locker and Sam Bradford how well that worked out for them. I think this is foolish, but congrats to Trojan fans! See you in Salt Lake in 2012. The kick won't be blocked next year, and points won't be added after the game. ha!
Umm, I would say it worked out pretty well retard. Sam Bradford went #1 and signed the largest rookie contract ever. Locker went what, 8th overall? Like he was going to go any higher the year before with Bradford or this year with Newton.

Hey look at the student athlete graudation rate percentage by race all over the country and tell me why their is a HUGE discrepancy between blacks and whites? I say if the you make a commitment in exchange for an education you should not be allowed to leave early.  Call me racist but numbers don't lie and I will say what I see!

SC wants to make a statement with this coming year being there first year of eligiablity. Im a alumni for Oregon U and a huge ducks fan this is bad for us but great for college football and the pac-12, cant say anything bad. Great job SC returning a great player, role model, and man back to an already great program. You will be ranked number one in the pre-season poll for sure. Put the Pac-12 back on the map and take down the evil empire that is the SEC. But also GO DUCKS!. ha! Good luck trojans.

Cool your jets there, rwmbkm.  I like Matt Barkley's talent and potential as a pro, but to call him one of the winningest QB's ever is a ridiculous stretch of reality.  For USC football, okay -- but not the rest of the football world.  Until this past season, Colt McCoy held the record at 45 wins but he was passed by Kellen Moore with his victory over UNLV last month.

Barkley has 27 wins as a starter at USC and that is more than respectable-- it's damn good.  But "one of the winningest qb's ever"?  I don't think so.  Seriously, dude.  For now, Rodney Peete has more wins than Barkley does.

Maybe he doesnt care about that. He knows that he will get drafted next year, maybe later or earlier in the first round or second who knows. The big thing is he hasnt had the chance to experience life as a Trojan football player without the dark cloud of sanctions and violations and new coach and all that. Next year will be his chance and I think he wants to experience that. He doesnt need the money because his family is well to do financially, he wants to graduate but as a football player who wouldnt want the chance to play for the Pac 12 title and a Heisman, and the Nat'l championship? You cant tell me their chances next year are not going to be good. The best teams in the conference other than SC will be Oregon, Washington, and maybe a sleeper that comes out of no where.  I do think it was a foolish decision if he wanted to be a high pick or get paid a ton of money. It doesnt seem that those factors were top priorities for him. The only people who will get the downside of his decision are the backup QB's who will now have to sit another year.

Good For Matt.  I personally have never been a fan of "leaving early" and honestly I'm wary when my teams draft college players that haven't graduated yet.  Mainly because a college education shows three very key character traits you'd want in a future leader/franchise player/career maker or breaker and those are 1) Ability to follow through with what he starts...4 years of college even free isn't easy (discipline) 2) Intelligence...finishing 4 years of College means that he has some competency to think critically, read, write and manage his affairs this can also be categorized as Maturity.  3)  Physical shape-one more year stronger and smarter and definitely upgraded his draft status barring injury which is a fairly minimal threat most of the time injuries don't happen if you're in good shape.  Enjoy that degree Matt and Grats on making a wise choice...I wish more college students would make the same decision.  Now what kind of draft would it be if Luck, and RG3 came out and said uh  we're going back to school too (assuming they haven't hired an agent, etc)?  That would be interesting and what kind fo shake up would take place hehe.

Good for Matt. Yeah he's turning down some money, but even if he has a mediocre year his stock will still be high from what he showed this year. He's obviously having a lot of fun at USC and you cant blame him for wanting to finish out college. Those years are a lot of fun and you only get them once.

Watch out for SC next year. They will be back with a vengeance are are hungry for that National Championship after 2 years of no bowls.
