Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012.  Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

I would like to start off by saying congratulations to Matt Barkley for standing up for what he believes in. His integrity towards his university and child hood dream of being a Trojan. With this decision he has legitimate chance of winning not only a National Championship but the Heisman Trophy. Barring a catastrohic injury this season he will be a top 5 pick in next years draft and get paid. Who knows he might become the greatest quarterback in Trojan history preceeding his in my mind what will be a solid NFL career. All this coming from a UCLA fan but I recognize talent and integrity and wish him all the best ... well maybe not so much against the Bruins BUT we all know how that's goign to turn out anyway. LOL ... Happy Holidays everyone!

Its people like you that make this site a good place to read blogs and such. Your not an SC fan but you give credit where credit is due. So many of these haters on this site are calling Barkley arrogant, egotistic and worse. He is probably the most respected QB at SC since Palmer was there around 10 years ago. He hasnt been in the news for partying downtown or anything like that. He has beena class act from day 1 and showed that yesterday in the press conference. He could have left and became a millionare but he felt he didnt need that yet. He felt that he wanted to do something great at SC and to me that is huge news. Its not like some of the other guys who everyone was like well either he does or doesnt. LaMichael James could have a press conference and not many would care because he isnt as high profile and doesnt have the same reputation around campus. Again thanks for your post becaue it makes for good reading coming from a rival. Lets hope Mora brings UCLA back so that at the end of each season its a big battle with SC coming out on top of course but none the less Bring out the best in both schools like before.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

This was a millions of dollars decision.  There are pretty much only 2 ways to look at this decision and one way is that he made this decision because he wants more money as a rookie.  With Andrew Luck's publicity, though Barkley possibly being better, Luck will be the number 1 overall pick.  This gives Barkley another year to show that he should be a number 1 pick, get a BCS championship, win a heisman, and make more money as the number 1 pick than say a number 5 or 6.  The other way to look at this is that it was a dumb decision because of the risk of injury and because he is losing out on millions of dollars which he could be making next year instead of 2013.  In his position we would have to believe that a lot of us would go with the 2nd way and take the money being a 5th or 6th pick of the first round.  It really could go either way but he has a ton going for him on both avenues and I wouldnt blame him for staying or going.

What a pompous douche!  He couldn't just call a reporter and say "It's Matt Barkley, I'm staying."?  No, let's get the band together and all the fans and meet at Heritage Hall to see if our savior, the wonderful Matt Barkley is going to play football for us.  Give me a break.  And we wonder why these jackasses feel a sense of entitlement.  The best thing would have been for everybody to ignore this pomp and circumstance and have him make his announcement to an empty field.  Put the egomaniac in his place.

He probably could have just called someone and done that but he didnt and they felt this was big enough to hold a press conference. it wasnt all for just him, this press conference was for everyone from people involved with the draft all the way to boosters and most importantly recruits. make it known so there is no confusion or mistakes because we all know how reliable "sources close to the program, or insiders in the media" are. I think it was classy and showed that the program is back. USC is high profile and now that they are relivant with rankings and the post season again this was a HUGE announcement. You obviously didnt see it for what it really was and also you must not know what it is like to be in the public spotlight like SC is. Its sad that you show your lack of intelligence by writing something so stupid.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

Good for him...some scout called him Matt Leinert dumb, read, it's about the money...don't think Matt will ever have money worries as in having too little of it!...a year from now my bet is he's in the final stages of attending to 'some serious unfinished business'...

He has umteen seniors and starters all around him next season all of the same mind...even his blind side tackle who jumped to the NFL will be seamlessly replaced...

I imagine they'd like to add back to the Trophy Case that reggie bush caused to be stripped of 'some serious' hardware ...

....besides the agents, scouts, bookies, and GMs of loser pro teams,  not to mention the 2012 scheduled opponents..who isn't a little happy he's coming back, he's chosen to live a year no amount of money can buy him down the road...National Title or Greek Tradgedy, he will play out the final act of "my rare journey as a Trojan football player"... Good for him.

I think he mad ea good decision, unless of course, the world ends in December 2012, in which case, he will miss his one and only shot to play as a professional

This may actually work out.  He is now much higher profile.  He will still be a top 10 pick and now he has great endorsement potential.  And he could win a championship which he most likely will not do in the pros.

Although you never know about injuries, I'm glad to see the kid stay in school.  Fast money is too prevelant today anyway, all should have to stay and earn a degree because it is a privelage and better equips them to be good people regardless of outcome in sports.  Be a hero to your school.  That being said, I want LSU to put a thumping on him next year in BCS Championship game.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

I am no Husky fan by any means, but at one point in the 90's the Universtiy of Washington had 5-6 quarterbacks playing in the NFL, not to mention other quarterbacks that had played for the UoW that at one point did play in the NFL.  They have had a dozen or so quarterbacks over the years go tot he NFL, so USC is nothing special they are just more high profile.  There is no one going to deny that USC has had tons of players of all positions go to the NFL, just don't be so arrogant to think that no other school out there has not produced lots of NFL prospects as well.  Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, Auburn, LSU, UCLA, Alabama, Miami, Florida, Florida State, to name a few, are all schools that perennially put athletes into all professional sports, USC is no more sepcial than any one of these, they just had a great run as of late...and typically fans of a school that has had a run the likes of USC will let their head swell thinking there is no comparison.  All schools eventually have ad years and it wasn't too long ago the USC was not all that great.  I mean look at Michigan, they wouldn't exactly be considered a powerhouse right now, but eventually they will claw their way back up.  Good schools always do.
