Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012.  Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

I would like to start off by saying congratulations to Matt Barkley for standing up for what he believes in. His integrity towards his university and child hood dream of being a Trojan. With this decision he has legitimate chance of winning not only a National Championship but the Heisman Trophy. Barring a catastrohic injury this season he will be a top 5 pick in next years draft and get paid. Who knows he might become the greatest quarterback in Trojan history preceeding his in my mind what will be a solid NFL career. All this coming from a UCLA fan but I recognize talent and integrity and wish him all the best ... well maybe not so much against the Bruins BUT we all know how that's goign to turn out anyway. LOL ... Happy Holidays everyone!

Good for Barkley.  He wants to finish what he started both on and off the field.  What a concept. He will do just fine in the 2013 NFL draft..barring any serious injury of course.  I remember a guy a named Peyton returned to Tennessee for his senior year...he's had a decent NFL career wouldn't you say?

I see that all of the USC haters are out in force here.  I don't blame them, because they know that they will get their tails kicked next season.  Bend over boys, and assume the position.  The same can be said for the Kiffin haters, mostly disgruntled SEC fans or Tennessee fans.  As far as this being a mistake, those believers are dead wrong.  Barkley will most likely be the #1 draft pick in 2013.  This year, Luck seems to have that locked down.  That means more money.  USC gets both Oregon and Notre Dame at home next season.  Their other two non-con games are at East Rutherford against Syracuse, and at home against Hawaii.  USC certainly has the schedule to run the table next season and go to the N.C. Game.  USC has their brilliant WR's coming back.  Safety T.J. McDonald also decided to return.  Every indicator said that Barkley should stay, and he did.  He made the right choice.

All this decision says is that Barkley wants to spend another year partying and kickin it to the campus hotties like Leinart I suspect we will soon be seeing pictures of him in a hot tub with a beer bong.

Barkley made the right decision. He's not quite ready for the NFL. In the NFL rookie QB's, especially top 10 picks, are expected to play now. Another year in college ball will only help. So now he gets to come back andthrow it 50 times a game to guys like Woods, Lee, Farmer, Telfer, etc., etc. Should be fun to watch. Barklet wants to be the next Carson Palmer not the next Fred Matua.
