Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012. Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

Matt Barkley skips NFL Draft, returning to USC

Maybe he took a good look at who might be drafting him this year and ran squealing back so he could win. Shoot, I for one do not blame him for going back to school but Lord help him if he suffers a career ending injury. If he does play in the ship next year against an SEC team like Bama or the Tigers he may not even get to finish the game. But good luck no matter what comes his way he will need it. He is arrogant enough to think SC gets back to the ship and that he might get the Heisman. I disagree but then again I have been wrong before. Have a great day folks! Yes, even you folks at USC.
yes. Matt is the one being arrogant here.

Chances are the same teams that would have taken Barkley in the next draft would still be the teams to take him in the following draft. If RG3 decides to stay at Baylor, the QB class will be very thin. The Colts will most likely draft Luck and that still leaves at least 5 or 6 teams in need of a franchise QB. Barkley could end up with Cleveland anyway.

And who hired those assistants? Lovie Smith and Mike Tomlin. They know what they're doing. Dumb coaches dont go to/win super bowls.

If you wanna make racist comments like that, do it on the KKK page you rasict f***.

Just because more black people tend to be in poverty doesn't mean that black people are smart. Our president is black, newsflash, and although I dont agree with a lot of the stuff he does he's a lot smarter than our last white president. And the University of Chicago and Harvard Law don't give degrees to stupid people.

jose - once again showing your ignorance, you clearly didn't get your college degree in a course of study that requires an understanding of statistics. Tell me, what percent of QBs in the NFL are black and what percent of the US population is black. Did you consider that maybe more white guys play QB becuase there are more white guys around? Only a racist would jump to their ability to read defenses. And only a dumb racist wouldn't notice that the statistical distribution is actually what you would expect.

You have to admire his commitment, but is it worth gambling his financial future? Wonder if it's more because he doesn't like the teams that would take him.

More white guys play QB and why is that? They got more upstairs and don't rely on just physical skill and can actually read defenses.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about this for Barkley, it just isn't a situation you can compare to the recent quarterbacks who decided to stay or leave (noticing comments comparing this to Locker, Bradford, and Sanchez).

You really can't compare this to the Mark Sanchez decision to leave. When Sanchez left early for the NFL the future of USC was decided, they were going to be under a postseason ban so there wasn't the opportunity that Barkley is presented with. Sanchez was not going to get the same showcase no matter how well he played.

Sam Bradford was only a Sophmore when he decided to return to the team, only completing two years of college football and then making the just seems alot more difficult. Even with the injury potential you have to think that the third year of college preparation would better situate him for long-term success in the NFL.

Jake Locker stayed his senior year and at the time had to know he could potentially lose alot of money with his decision. There were already discussions of the Rookie Wage Scale and he had to know this was going to be a major topic in the new CBA discussions. Being the 8th overall pick is nothing to turn your head and it is still fine for him.

For Barkley you have to understand that he hasn't be given the same opportunity to compete for a National Championship and other postseason accomplishments due to the sanctions. Add that with being the quarterback that has the opportunity to lead USC "back to prominence" is a hard thing to pass up.

Congratulations Jose. You just redefined the word "irony."
A wetback making fun of the black race....
