Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012.  Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

Look at the assistants for Tomlin and Smith.  Without their assistants they would not have the "Neccessities" to be an NFL head coach.

jose - many do actually but I'm sure your racist mind can't comprehend that. About 20% of the NBA players do, the Professional Baseball Scholarship Plan was used by over 65% of baseball players. I don't know the numbers for the NFL but I know of many who ahve like Andre Johnson and Ty Warren.

Bottom line, you are right in one respect - athletics help many of these kids out of a bad situation (As it does for many dirt poor rednecks hicks you racist). And that isn't a bad thing. You are wrong in many other respects as race is not the determining factor, only a racist like you would think so. Turning down the money is still dumb for someone whose core skillset has a limited timeframe of use while the college isn't going anywhere, only a dumb racists who has limited understanding of economics and business decisions probably becuase they wasted their education and either never graduated or chose a degree that didn't impart critical thinking would think otherwise.

So to summarize, the only conclusion to be drawn from this is that you are a dumb racist who know little of what he speaks, and Matt Barkley turned down multi-million dollars that we would never expect college kids in any other skillset to do for reasons only he truly knows.

We're talking about college here. White QB's fail in the NFL too, there's just more white people who play QB so more succeed.

And what about Mike Tomlin and Lovie Smith? Theyre black head coaches which requires more brains than QB.

josemv1: "Ghetto people"??  Really, you jerk?  Aside from bein an asinine, not to mention bigoted and racist slur, your comments are totally off base regarding Barkley, who is anything BUT a "ghetto" person.  More like "Upper middle-class white" would be a more accurate description.

I think the same "failure" label was given to Cam Newton coming out of college...we know how that turned out

We will see RG3 and Keith Price fail in the NFL.  Defenses are more complex and they don't have the "neccessities" to be a starting QB in the NFL.

Good words bro!

Evil Empire also great!  I am unfortunately satationed in SEC land (Georgia).  I'm glad I will be leaving and retiring in Colorado, close to the Broncos, and closer now to USC.  I will get to see all of SCs games. (yes, I could get Gameday, but no need to ).  It will be great for football.  Glad that USC will be relevant.  Look forward to more battles with the Ducks.

Of course you can go back and get your degree but how many actually do?  If it not for athletics most of these ghetto people would never set foot in college even a simple one like a JC.

Good for Barkley wanting to stay and have a shot at some hardware....next year USC gets to compete for the PAC12 title and a bowl game if I'm not mistaken.  I'm sure wanting to stay for a "degree" is not the real reason...talk to anyone that attends these big schools and they'll tell you they've never seen a football or basketball player in class...LOL

Hey Jose, shut up you racist a$$hole.

RG3 - 3998 yards, 36 TD's, 6 INT's....oh and a heisman

Keith Price - 2635 yards, 29 TD's, and 11 Int's

You don't put up those numbers if you can't read defenses. And they're both black.
