Even with a projected Top 10 draft stock, USC quarterback Matt Barkley has decided to return for another season with the Trojans.

The junior from Newport Beach made his decision official on Thursday, making his announcement in the shadows of the USC greats in Heritage Hall.

"I am prepared to play quarterback in the NFL," Barkley explained. "It is my dream to play quarterback in the NFL. I intend to make that dream a reality.

"But I also know that I came to the University of Southern California to compete, and have a rare journey as a USC football player, to earn a degree from this exceptional university, and forge life-long bonds with the Trojan family.

"I will earn my degree, the bonds have been forged, but I know in my heart that I have not yet finished my journey as a Trojan football player. Our USC football team has been through some tough times, and we have persevered. The 2012 has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it."

The crowd erupted, the band began playing, and the junior from Newport Beach flashed a smile as he confirmed what many USC fans had hoped.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 69.1 percent of his passes and leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011. He returns to Southern Cal with his two favorite receivers from the past season - Robert Woods and Marquise Lee - and will bring lofty expectations to the program for the first time since the Pete Carroll era.

Barkley was projected by many to be a Top 10 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the lure of one more season as the Trojans starting quarterback was enough to bring him back to school. With the way USC finished the season in 2011, they will likely be early favorites to compete for a National Championship in 2012.  Barkley grew up dreaming of playing for USC, and with the NCAA sanctions lifted he will get the opportunity to lead the Trojans to a Pac-12 title - or possibly more.

josemv1 - you are a fool if you think the dsicrepency is due to black leaving early (do the math on the discrepency and the number of early entrants and you will realize how stupid a thing it is to say by a dumb racist) and you are a even bigger fool, and a very dumb one at that, if you think an educated junior in college who has a chance to leave school to make seven figures in their chosen proffesion (be it as a programmer, engineer, athlete, scientist or anything else) wouldn't take it. Only your racist blinder would cause you to hold athletes to a standard no rational (which it doesn't seem you are) person would put on themselves.

You can always go back and get a degree you idiot. You are more than just a racist, you are dumb and advising very poor busines decisions.

Guys don't pay attention to Jose he is an obvious white guy trolling under an hispanic name.  And as to his comment about black QB's don't fool yourself kid. Anyone who makes it past freshman year at USC is far from an idiot no matter what your major is.

My bad that was meant for the poster who said he would rather have a White QB that can read defenses than a black or hispanic

Maybe he took a good look at who might be drafting him this year and ran squealing back so he could win. Shoot, I for one do not blame him for going back to school but Lord help him if he suffers a career ending injury. If he does play in the ship next year against an SEC team like Bama or the Tigers he may not even get to finish the game. But good luck no matter what comes his way he will need it. He is arrogant enough to think SC gets back to the ship and that he might get the Heisman. I disagree but then again I have been wrong before. Have a great day folks! Yes, even you folks at USC.

I wonder how much persuasion was made by Kiffin...I like Barkley and I'm glad he's going to finish school but I hate to see Kiffin gain anything.

The bowl ban didn't really hurt the team in the same way losing 10 scholarships a year will hurt them in the next three years.  SC tuition is a ton of money, and that means 10 players next year are going to have to pay their own way instead of getting a full ride.  That makes a difference.  I'm a Bruin fan, and we will still get our asses kicked by the Trojans, but let's not crown them BCS champs just yet.

Great choice Barkley.  You will get a degree and be a top 5 draft pick in 2013.  This move shows allot of character and I hope allot of school age boys and girls are listening to this.  With ALL that went on in college football this season, finally a feel good story to end the year on a high note.

Sanchez was out for the $$$ as well and of course he was leaving too.  I would rather have a white qb with less talent but more brains to be able to read defenses than a black or hispanic qb.
