One of the main critiques of the current bowl system is how schools, more often than not, lose money by going to a bowl game. This year is no different, as Clemson is finding out that its first trip to a BCS bowl game is going to leave the school in the red.

According to The Post and Courier, with ticket sales where they are currently, Clemson is going to lose about $180,000 thanks to their trip to the Orange Bowl.

As of last week, Clemson had only been able to sell about half of the 17,500 tickets it had to buy from the Orange Bowl for the low, low price of around half a million dollars. Clemson will get a $1.75 million bowl allowance from the ACC, but all in all the trip is going to cost the school $1.91 million. This includes the price of the unsold tickets along with meals, lodging and travel costs for the football team, band, cheerleaders and support staff.

Though there are other benefits according to Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips.

"There is a perception problem; it's not a windfall," said Phillips. "You just want to be able to break even. Sometimes you don't even break even. But there are significant benefits. You get some extra practice time. And anytime you can get on national television, it continues exposure for your program, which is very significant value."

Yes, and that exposure for the program helps in things like recruiting, which helps bring even better players to Clemson. Players that will help Clemson consistently win and get to bowl games and lose more money.

I show the total ACC payout for all bowl games at roughly $34 mil. Split 12 ways, that's 2.83 mil per school. I don't know how the ACC divies up their money, but in the Pac 12, the participating school gets a double share- thus giving Clemson more than the 2.83 mil in total.

Somebody else posted earlier that the cost per participant on this trip would be $10K per person, and they brought up that this seems pretty high. I agree.

No way the universtiy loses money after the bowls are done on this.

If you want to talk about who got shafted this year, look no further than Southern Miss beating Houston in the CUSA Championship game. That truly did cost the Golden Eagles and conference big time. No BCS = no $$$. I estimate that win "cost" USM about $920K out of their own pocket because there was no BCS payout.

There are 12, yes 12 Bowl Games AFTER January 1st this year. With my work schedule, I don't have time to go watch the Orange Bowl mid week.
I'm sure the actual date of the Orange Bowl has a lot to do with it.  Clemson fans are some of the best (and worst!) in the country.  They always support their team.  But times are tight, and have been for several years; people need to work, not take an extended holiday to go spend more money in Miami after having had a hard time buying christmas gifts.  Plus, like many others have said, there is almost no point to the BCS games that are NOT the title game.  In the pre-BCS era, an Orange bowl win was still a big deal, even if you weren't ranked #1 or #2, because you could still claim a major bowl win and sometimes a small piece of the "we're the best" argument, depending on how the rest of the games panned out.

No longer.

that's a shame. now we see why these bowls take some teams that arent as good, but travel well. if the fans wont show up, then these teams should not complain likethey do.

Life is what you make of it, if you constatnly dwell on the negative you will be forever miserable.  I suggest you quit seeing what others have and what you don't have, and be thanful for the things you do have.  If not, you might as well become a full-fledged pinko commie left wing socialist nut job and move to Europe instead of occupying Wall Street.  As for me I'm proud to live in the greatest country ever, namely the good ol' U-S-of-A!!!!  Even if it's full of fat-cat rich white guys.  God bless 'em, I say!

This is too funny.  People still think that "logic" or "common sense" have anything to do with the decision-making on whether to keep the bowl games or what the payouts are or who gets to go to them?

It's always been about the "have's versus the have nots" and which one of them do you think gets to make the decisions?   The same fat cigar-smoking white guys that always get to make the decisions and you not only get to live with it but also digest their BS infested rhetoric as if there's some reason for you to have some small bit of hope for "change" in the future.  They'll quit re-marrying someone half their age before they are willing to let you have a slice of their pie.

Quit thinking that you actually live in the "land of the free" and accept that the only choices you have are the ones that you are "allowed" to have.  Just take it in the shorts like you always have, act as if reality doesn't exist and merely say "thank you sir may I have another."

Go fatcats, it's working just fine!!!

This is deceiving we need to know exactly how much money Clemson is getting from all the other bowls that ACC is going to.  If we are going to take out the ACCs cut we need to know Clemsons cut for the other bowl games.

This is just one of a thousand reasons why Div I-A College Football needs to have a post-season playoff system put in place. If you haven't already, please read the book "Death To The BCS".
