One of the main critiques of the current bowl system is how schools, more often than not, lose money by going to a bowl game. This year is no different, as Clemson is finding out that its first trip to a BCS bowl game is going to leave the school in the red.

According to The Post and Courier, with ticket sales where they are currently, Clemson is going to lose about $180,000 thanks to their trip to the Orange Bowl.

As of last week, Clemson had only been able to sell about half of the 17,500 tickets it had to buy from the Orange Bowl for the low, low price of around half a million dollars. Clemson will get a $1.75 million bowl allowance from the ACC, but all in all the trip is going to cost the school $1.91 million. This includes the price of the unsold tickets along with meals, lodging and travel costs for the football team, band, cheerleaders and support staff.

Though there are other benefits according to Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips.

"There is a perception problem; it's not a windfall," said Phillips. "You just want to be able to break even. Sometimes you don't even break even. But there are significant benefits. You get some extra practice time. And anytime you can get on national television, it continues exposure for your program, which is very significant value."

Yes, and that exposure for the program helps in things like recruiting, which helps bring even better players to Clemson. Players that will help Clemson consistently win and get to bowl games and lose more money.

Sounds to me like you just need to stiff the band and cheerleaders. So much for Clemson travelling well I guess.

Death to the BCS

If enough schools lose money and are dissatisfied with their slots, maybe there will finally be some bona fide discussion about ending the corrupt BCS and bowl systems once and for all.  All the bowl system is currently doing is taking money from the general funds of the athletic departments and giving it to insiders.  It's great when they blow some of it on the players and the bands, because the bowl system is supposed to be "all about the students and student-athletes."
The worst part, though, is the ticket guarantees and the amount of money that goes to professional hangers-on and bowl nabobs, not to mention the parties and "functions" that the presidents and other officers of the schools and their families get to attend.   It's really simple: the NCAA should outlaw ticket requirements from the schools.  No school should ever have to buy as many as one extra ticket again.  If the tickets aren't used, let the schools return them.  Also, all band members and official school parties should be given complimentary tickets.  The bowls make enough money from their TV contracts.
Ultimately, though, a playoff is needed to determine a true champion on the field.   There is a bright side for Clemson, though: they won't have to look for a replacement for Dabo Swinney this year.

Agreed : I am glad someone pointed out the obvious. No one is loosing money associated with these bcs bowls. PERIOD Look at the total conference shared income from these bowl games and tell me they loose money. Really people do you think all these conferences align themselves with the bcs because they loose money??? The conferences make money and it is shared appropriately with the teams. CLEMSON this is your first bcs bowl game in how many years ( if ever) and you can't sell your ticket allotment. I am not a fan of the bcs but they do pay a lot of money and it's why we are stuck in this system. And it's the power conferences that benefit the most that don't want it to change.

Hey Vehemon! You are an idiot my friend. You claim there are a bunch of "idiot posters" today, but you refer to Clemson as Clempson twice. Bro; there is no P in Clemson and I'm guessing you have absolutely zero idea what state Clemson is actually in. I'll give you a hint my man: Clemson is in the state that is credited for having the 1st battle of the American Civil War. I know Vedemon; that might be a little tough. Here's another clue; an ex-Florida coach currently coaches in that state and his name is not Charlie Weis or Tim Tebow. You figure it out bro!

When WVU went to the Final Four a couple of years ago, samething its all Big Money. The NCAA could give a Damm about the schools. The BCS people are the Same way.The had a nice article in USA Today the weekend edition about this very issue.WVU had  9 different sets of tickets, and none of them were very good tickets.Again the NCAA has it head up its ASS.But they have no problem taking the money from the schools.Several years ago some conferences were talking about breaking away from the NCAA.Thats what really needs to happen. They are useless nowadays, except to collect money and put schools on probation. All the Conference breakup, that didn't say a Damm thing.USELESS.NCAA STANDS FOR NO CLUE AT ALL.

Well, they want to play this game at Clemson? Lets take a look at the balance sheets for the trip! I bet we can find a way to save them the $180k. Bet you won't be able to get an itemization of expenses to back this up. Seriously, since they put this out there, let's post the itemization for the budget for the trip. Let's see if we can't help the Clemson budget office do a little better job! :)

It's ironic that the SEC schools that do not play in a bowl game actually make the most profit since all bowl revenue is split between the schools, but not any of the expenses to play in one.

LSU and Alabama BANDS will cost the school about a MILLION DOLLARS.  Each ticket for the band will cost $350.00 a ticket.  I have watched most of the bowls that have been on ESPEEN and NO BOWL was close to being a sellout.  Bowls will make their money, schools are RIPPED off.

i'll bet you that the offices of the ncaa in indy dont lose a cent. they seem to be raking in the money for a nonprofit organiszation. it sure is great when a team is awarded the right to play in a bowl game and every one around them makes money but the teams that were "awarded the game"". the ncaa as it is now needs to get playoffs in the works.bowl games are politicaly motivated and if you can bring more people the better bowl you get. phooey.
