Well, you can't blame Penn State for trying, can you?

The Nittany Lions are conducting what by their own admission has a been a "deliberate and measured" search for Joe Paterno's replacement and are the final FBS team to fill their 2011 head coaching vacancy. But any complaints would have been quickly silenced if they could become the program that finally pries away Chris Petersen from Boise State. It's no surprise a Penn St. official reportedly visited Idaho twice last week in an effort to make the program's pitch to Petersen.

But like every other previous suitor for the Bronco coach's services, that pitch has fallen on deaf ears--if it was ever even heard in the first place. The Patriot-News's David Jones has reported that Petersen "has made it known he is not interested in Penn State's vacant head coaching position."

Jones writes that the decision is "no shocker," and surely it isn't; after he turned down all manner of high-profile jobs the previous several offseasons (including UCLA earlier this month), convincing Petersen to take a scandal-plagued position that several lesser coaches have already shied away from was always the longest of long shots.

But given the position Penn State finds itself in -- no coach and not even any real leads on one, with Signing Day rapidly approaching and the fanbase growing more nervous by the day -- Petersen was the kind of prize that was worth taking that shot anyway. The only criticism to be made is if that shot came out of desperation, and with it having failed, the search is poised to go on for several more days ... or even weeks.

I would consider a "powerhouse" team to have several attributes in any sport.  Win at a rate that is in the top 5% of your competition for any given time period.  It could be one year, it could be many years, but it would be pretty undeniable over a 5 year span.  Also, it would be a team that teams look forward to playing as a challenge, or hate to play because of their strengths.  Teams in college just can't sustain a top 5 ranking year after year, but regular visit there, with regular top 20 seasons and bowl wins are pretty substantial and powerhouse-ish.  USC, Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, Penn State. Alabama, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and more have all had sub-par seasons in the past 10-12 years.  They have still been powerhouses during that time, as well.  I am excited to see Boise State play back East.

Upfront.  I feel for your school and in no way judge the few that are accused represent your entire school.  I hope one day you recover and move on without the stigmatism.  Now, on another note.  Just how many years and games does it take to become a "Power House?"  1,3, 5, 10, 100?  Does it take a record of 75-6 at home?  Does it take beating BCS conference champions year after year?  Does one have to beat the likes of Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, Virginia Tech, Oregon State every time they play them?  Or 5 times in a row?  Who judges?  The point is Boise State can run with the big dogs in any conference.  And any given season can be the champion of any conference.  The problem is the big boys wont schedule us because they stand a very good chance of losing and if they do their rankings drop like a hot rock.  There is really no upside for a BCS school to play BSU, unless you are trying to rebuild your program.  So, knowing this, BSU is going after the BCS and the big money.  First stop BIG EAST.  After we dominate that (might take a year or two) we will move on to tougher conferences.  BCS schools cannot hide forever especially if we ever get a shot at the NCS.  So continue squatting when you pee and crying that BSU is but a flash in the pan.  I will continue supporting my school and smiling as you try to come up with new excuses.

It's amazing how the PSU faithful fail to acknowledge their institution knowingly allowed a Pedophile to roam freely for a decade. It's easy to state the obvious Jerry Sandusky is an animal. However, a failure of Institutional control allowed this animal out of it's cage.

Hey Amish Avenger. You are correct sir. Every area has pedophiles in their midst. The difference is in most every other place, those dudes are sitting behind bars; not sitting on the couch at home watching re-runs of "Deliverance" on house arrest.

Petersen contacted Penn State. Penn State did not contact Petersen. To say he isn't interested is a lie. He was interested enough to participate in two follow up interviews.

where do you live? I'm sure no one has ever been raped there....bro. so, get your blue horse t-shirt and cheer for the mighty Boise State, as they pounded.....Georgia...and 10 high school teams. sorry, bro, but it ain't big time. Sandusky is a dirt bag, but only a fool would indict the entire town of state college because of that. You have pedophiles in your town too. probably more of them. bro.

That is probably the exact comment you made about Urban Meyer when he left Utah to go to Florida. Winning coaches win where ever they go. maybe not at first but soon enough. Watch and see how well Ohio State is after the probation is over. With Urban at the helm they may not lose another game to the SEC ever. So to think Coach Peterson would be any less succesful at Penn State is unthinkable. The only good news for the big 10 is he is staying in Boise so Penn State wont win the title every year and playing against Ohio State will be an example of a small reason Urban left Utah to begin with. Yes I mean a small reason. Besides I am hoping they will land him in Miami Florida soon.

I don't think its too early to call Boise State a "powerhouse" but that doesn't mean that they won't have down years. Just look at Texas, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, etc. All of those programs are considered powerhouses but they've had some down years recently. Boise State may have a down year next year but the real test will be to see how they handle it and recover.
