Well, you can't blame Penn State for trying, can you?

The Nittany Lions are conducting what by their own admission has a been a "deliberate and measured" search for Joe Paterno's replacement and are the final FBS team to fill their 2011 head coaching vacancy. But any complaints would have been quickly silenced if they could become the program that finally pries away Chris Petersen from Boise State. It's no surprise a Penn St. official reportedly visited Idaho twice last week in an effort to make the program's pitch to Petersen.

But like every other previous suitor for the Bronco coach's services, that pitch has fallen on deaf ears--if it was ever even heard in the first place. The Patriot-News's David Jones has reported that Petersen "has made it known he is not interested in Penn State's vacant head coaching position."

Jones writes that the decision is "no shocker," and surely it isn't; after he turned down all manner of high-profile jobs the previous several offseasons (including UCLA earlier this month), convincing Petersen to take a scandal-plagued position that several lesser coaches have already shied away from was always the longest of long shots.

But given the position Penn State finds itself in -- no coach and not even any real leads on one, with Signing Day rapidly approaching and the fanbase growing more nervous by the day -- Petersen was the kind of prize that was worth taking that shot anyway. The only criticism to be made is if that shot came out of desperation, and with it having failed, the search is poised to go on for several more days ... or even weeks.

This sick scandal will be a permanent part of Penn St history.  Recruits who have choices will be going elsewhere.  They will find somebody willing to take their millions to coach there, but again, probably not an established coach with choices.  It will take many years for them to regain competitive quality and expect Pitt to take full recruiting advantage within the state.

Penn State will either hire Larry Johnson or Tom Bradley for the head coaching position within the next two weeks. The administration will claim that they properly vetted all candidates and both of the individuals listed above were cleared from any wrongdoing in the Sandusky/Paterno/PSU debacle. The problem with the shortsighted thinking of the Board of Trustees and acting athletic director is that noone can believe anything that makes its way out of the PSU camp.

Penn State continues to try to have it both ways instead of committing to doing the right thing. They need to immediately divorce themselves from the internal candidates. Noone can believe that Mr. Bradley and Mr. Johnson were not aware of the situation, particularly when they all worked in such close quarters for so long. Both have pledged their support to Joe Paterno which again, flies in the face of getting a just result from the entire mess that is the PSU culture. Get away from internal candidates and any other candidates that have PSU ties. Any hire in that vein will stink of additional internal family cover up. Best choice of head coaches for PSU at this point would be a respected high school coach in the area.

Penn State needs to commit to their academic institution only. The Board needs to put sports on the back burner while they restore order to the delegation of authority policies of the university. No longer should sports dictate what the administraion does or how it conducts its business. The best way to show that is to commit the resources to regaining the trust of its students and alumni. At that point they can begin the process of reaching out to prospective students. Once the institution begins to regain some integrity, they should begin to look at sports again.

I remain flummoxed that the PSU Board of Trustees somehow thought it was proper to donate money to various "abuse" causes and made the donations public! Whate were they thinking. Do they really think they can sway the public opinion of the horrific events that took place for so long on their campus?

How can a football player, shower in the same facilities where the alleged criminal acts took place? That is disgusting and turns my stomach when I think about it from an athletes perspective. As a parent of a potential recruit, how could you allow your son or daughter to commit to PSU when you know what happened there and was covered up for so long? The program needs to take a step back and assume its proper place as a small part of the bigger university picture. Hiring a local respected high school coach will provide a buffer during a difficult time and is the only way PSU can rebound. After three years, begin the process on your terms PSU.

It always amazes me........and even humors me, at how downright angry some people get when the name Boise State is mentioned.

I think PSU waited too long for  the 2012 season. I would consider bringing back Bradley for a year and maybe etting some of the fervor die down, and maybe the trial will be behind them.

When something happens to any program, people always say it's the end and it never is. It will take time to be sure, but Penn State Football is by no means done forever.

I say this with all due respect to the victims and their families.

Hey Amish Avenger. State College a beautiful town to live in? Not if you're a 10-year old boy when just playing @ the park is an adventure of hide and seek. You and all the other PSU apologists just don't get it. This sordid story that the proper authorities all covered up is NOT going away any time soon. Hell, there's going to be civil lawsuits swirling around the inactions of university officials for another 5 years; not to mention the circus that will cover the Sandusky trial. Between old Jerr and his attorney, that spectacle will dominate Happy Valley for decades. As for Boise being a flash in the pan, that's just an ignorant statement bro. Speaking of being a fool, that's what everyone will say on hearing who will be the next Nittany Lion head man in 2012.

Can anyone who says that "Boise State needs to join a real conference" please SHUT UP! Boise would join any of the big 5 conferences in a heartbeat. So, either demand that the SEC offer an invitation to Boise or please quit complaining that Boise should join a real conference. They are doing everything they can to move up to a better conference. I assure you that Boise would take an SEC invitation if offered. They are joining the Big East just have a shot at an AQ conference for crying out loud.

Why do people think that there will be NCAA santions? There have been no NCAA violations that I know of. Once Penn State cleans house with the coaching staff and administration, there will be no one remaining who is tied to the scandal or the Paterno era (which is a good thing). Penn State will eventually move on, and now would be a good time for someone like Petersen to come in there and start over.

Looks like the State Pen job is even worse than the Michigan job. They're offering MILLIONS of dollars, and can't even get someone to listen. That program is dead.

Toon,

Boise declined the Pac 12 and the Big 12???  Can you provide even one link to a story that backs-up that claim?

Go ahead and search, I'll wait.
