Well, you can't blame Penn State for trying, can you?

The Nittany Lions are conducting what by their own admission has a been a "deliberate and measured" search for Joe Paterno's replacement and are the final FBS team to fill their 2011 head coaching vacancy. But any complaints would have been quickly silenced if they could become the program that finally pries away Chris Petersen from Boise State. It's no surprise a Penn St. official reportedly visited Idaho twice last week in an effort to make the program's pitch to Petersen.

But like every other previous suitor for the Bronco coach's services, that pitch has fallen on deaf ears--if it was ever even heard in the first place. The Patriot-News's David Jones has reported that Petersen "has made it known he is not interested in Penn State's vacant head coaching position."

Jones writes that the decision is "no shocker," and surely it isn't; after he turned down all manner of high-profile jobs the previous several offseasons (including UCLA earlier this month), convincing Petersen to take a scandal-plagued position that several lesser coaches have already shied away from was always the longest of long shots.

But given the position Penn State finds itself in -- no coach and not even any real leads on one, with Signing Day rapidly approaching and the fanbase growing more nervous by the day -- Petersen was the kind of prize that was worth taking that shot anyway. The only criticism to be made is if that shot came out of desperation, and with it having failed, the search is poised to go on for several more days ... or even weeks.

Petersen is a great coach. With that being said...the ONLY way Boise State will get any respect is to join a conference...(big east...not...sorry) then they would have a chance to" put up " or" shut up ".

Good for coach Pete  to stick to his word and stay with Boise State.  It still amazes me of the myriad of excuses BSU haters come up with as to why they are either A. Lucky  B. Mediocre talent C. Undeserving D. Just a 'gimicky/trickeration team E. a mixture of all the previous.  Why, if BSU played in the SEC, ACC, PAC 12, Big whatever, day in and day out they wouldnt have a chance.  never mind the fact that they beat the SEC East Champion this year, the Pac 12 Champion 2 previous years, the ACC Champion and various others.  You people are going to have to finally accept that BSU is for real and will continue as a great program.  That may not go another 75-5 but they will end up dominating the Big East prior to the next division they end up going to.   There is a REASON all the schools needing a head coach go to Boise State.  Its because we win with talent passed over and labeled inferior by the "experts".  Imagine what we would do with a Georgia, LSU, USC, Alabama recruiting class.

Why would Peterson want to go to Penn State with that huge, dark cloud hovering over Happy Valley and not going away anytime soon? Face facts Nittany Nation; you're going to have to settle for some assistant or a head coach @ a mid-level program (at best) for your next head man. Maybe PSU should go after Dennis Erickson, Rick Neuheisel, Mike Locksley or Ron Zook. Those guys would probably take the gig. As for Boise not joining the PAC-12 or the Big 12; they were never invited. You can't just say you want to join a better league and expect to get in.

Ped State isn't a good fit for Peterson or any other coach with integrity.

Hey Mike. Why did Boise decline to go to the Pac12 and the Big12? Instead they go to the Big East after the good teams left there for the ACC. By joining the PAC 12 or Big12 they could show everyone why they deserve respect.

peterson doesnt want to play in a conference where there is weekly competion

You my friend are beyond an absolute idiot.  Petersen (not peterson) plays competition EVERY week on par with his teams individual skill level and his employers financial budget level.  By all expectations, BSU will be in a rebuilding year next year.  We open the season against MSU.  Not saying we beat them, but will not be blown off the field by any means.  Let's just look at the stats next year after the BSU and Ohio State games against MSU.  I'm willing to bet that the difference won't be 4+ times the difference in the score that their respective football budgets would indicate should occur.  Get a life!

Some of you Boise State fans keep talking about the big wins over Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Oregon etc.  If you will remember the Virginia Tech game the score was BSU 33/ Vt 30, a very very close game. In fact, if you go back and look at that game, Chris Peterson was sweating bullets, until BSU made a trick play to win. Both teams, BSU and VT was in this game to the final whisle. I respect Boise State and I hope you do well in the future, and I know a win is a win, but there have been some exaggeration over being a giant killer. Also, your defeat of Oklahoma was by no means a blowout either. So, let's all of us keep things in perspective.  I don't think BSU would do as well week-in and week-out in the SEC, ACC, B1G, BIG XII or PAC12 Conferences. This is my opinion only, and again I respect Boise State, and all I'm saying is don't make your wins over BCS teams look bigger than they really are. A couple of those wins went down to the final second of the games.

At this point in time, only a complete MORON or Penn State-for-life would take the job at Penn State.

There are 3 kisses of death on the progam.
1 - the sex allegations
2 - following a legend
3 - how long has it been since Penn State was relevant?
Any one of these would be a BIG CHALLENGE for an experienced coach.

At this point, Penn State needs someone from outside the program to show Penn State is cleaning house.  But no one from outside should come anywhere near College Park.

That leaves the only option on the table - promote someone from within.  See what they can do for a couple of years - then fire them for failing to win a national championship and then hire a new coach from outside the program.  By that time, Penn State will have hitthe complete bottom and anyone coming in will have a chance of improving things.  Right now, there is almost no chance of improving things.

I love all this 'buzz' and discussion about Coach Peterson and Boise State. Chris Peterson doesn't have to prove anything to anybody about his ability to 'coach' and build a big time program. He has already done it...and in the part of the most taleked about, love 'em or hate 'em, football program in the country!!  He can stay at Boise State and have all the wealth, fame, respect and recognition that comes along with building and guiding one of the TOP FOOTBALL PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY!!
