Well, you can't blame Penn State for trying, can you?

The Nittany Lions are conducting what by their own admission has a been a "deliberate and measured" search for Joe Paterno's replacement and are the final FBS team to fill their 2011 head coaching vacancy. But any complaints would have been quickly silenced if they could become the program that finally pries away Chris Petersen from Boise State. It's no surprise a Penn St. official reportedly visited Idaho twice last week in an effort to make the program's pitch to Petersen.

But like every other previous suitor for the Bronco coach's services, that pitch has fallen on deaf ears--if it was ever even heard in the first place. The Patriot-News's David Jones has reported that Petersen "has made it known he is not interested in Penn State's vacant head coaching position."

Jones writes that the decision is "no shocker," and surely it isn't; after he turned down all manner of high-profile jobs the previous several offseasons (including UCLA earlier this month), convincing Petersen to take a scandal-plagued position that several lesser coaches have already shied away from was always the longest of long shots.

But given the position Penn State finds itself in -- no coach and not even any real leads on one, with Signing Day rapidly approaching and the fanbase growing more nervous by the day -- Petersen was the kind of prize that was worth taking that shot anyway. The only criticism to be made is if that shot came out of desperation, and with it having failed, the search is poised to go on for several more days ... or even weeks.

I wonder if TCU would agree with that statement, Ian?

To ba_bahawkus:
You must either be a real moron or you are just brain dead.  I notice you are a Radier fan.  My bad that explains it all.  Your reputation is 91 about 50 points than your IQ.  I suppose you root regularly for the SEC.  Boise would kick most of the SEC boys ass week in and week out it is just too bad we don't get a chance.

I respect Chris Peterson and the job he has done with that program. Wish the BCS crappy system would more. He's going to do at Boise state what Bowden did for FSU if he stays there. Go BSU.

This really isn't a big surprise.  If Petersen was interested in another job, he'd have taken it already, surely he would have taken the UCLA job.  Penn State really cannot afford to go much more deliberative becasue they are going to end up with no one at the helm by national signing day.  I don't think there's any doubt that they would have taken Meyer, but Ohio State struck quickly to grab him first.

Peterson is turning (already HAS) Boise St. into the Penn St of the West (minus the Sandusky factor, of course).  In the 1960's, when Eastern football was considered second-rate (just like the WAC and MWC of today), Paterno and Penn St. had undefeated seasons, won major bowl games, yet could get ranked no higher than 3rd.  Kind of looks like Boise St. of today, don't ya think?  Peterson can write his own ticket WITHOUT leaving Bosie St.  Just igve it a few more years and his Broncos become the new Nittany Lions, if they haven't already.

You clowns don't think Petersen could handle a Big 10 job after putting up nearly a .900 winning percentage at Boise St, but I'll bet you didn't have any problem with Tressell, who had never coached a D1-A game when he was hired at Ohio St.

Meatheads!

I love it when people say that he wouldn't do it because he is scared to compete with the Big Boys.  What a croc.  No decent college football coach in their right mind would take Penn State right now.  Penn State has it's name wrapped up with one of the worst scandals in history and even if the University doesn't take a hit for it directly their name is tarnished for the forseable future.  If you are a top recruit are you going to pick Penn State in the wake of all of this?  Sad to say but Chris Peterson will probably be able to get better recruits at Boise State than Penn State.  Chris Peterson sees a Boise State program that still has room to grown and improve but he has built a solid foundation there.  With Penn State he would be taking over a smouldering crater and one of the most toxic image problems in all of college football.  This doesn't even begin to cover how Penn State would be horrible for his personal life (much farther away from his father and his hometown in Yuba City, CA and he has a great life for his own family in the Boise area). I wish Penn State luck and it's players definitely deserve better but unfortunately I see things getting worse for Penn State football before they get better.

I first don't believe coaching in the big ten is coaching with the biggies. The only player nationally over the past ten years was OSU and they did it with cheating(sweater vest). Now they hire Meyer who has a great coaching resume but remember his Florida teams we're nation leaders in arrests. So the buckeye way continues cheat until caught we are considered untouchable so are sanctions will always be minimal for the cheating we committ.

That said PSU is as unattractive a job as there can be. Peterson may not play the big boys everytime out but everytime he plays them he beats them. Next year he will crush Michigan State in East Lansing. Michigan is a half a championship in 50 years so I know their as irrelevant as Georgia Tech and Washington who got half a championship two. The Big Ten is the New Big  East thats a biggie HA HA HA .
