Matt McGloin will not play in TicketCity Bowl

Earlier this week, Penn State announced that Curtis Drake, the sophomore wide receiver who sent QB Matt McGloin to the hospital with head injuries after a fight, would not join the team for the TicketCity Bowl. Now, McGloin will miss the game as well.

According to PennLive.com, Penn State head coach Tom Bradley said on Sunday that McGloin would be out for the TicketCity Bowl against Houston, and that means Rob Bolden will be under center for the Nittany Lions instead. Bolden and McGloin had been in a QB platoon for most of the season, and it was only after Joe Paterno was fired that McGloin was named the full-time starter.

McGloin was knocked out in the fight, and according to his father, he suffered a seizure and a probable concussion as an aftermath of the fight. He has been with the team in Dallas, but not practicing; McGloin was meeting with area physicians last week.

Neither McGloin nor Bolden have been particularly productive for the Nittany Lions, but McGloin eventually established himself as the more effective of the two QBs. McGloin went 125-231 for 1571 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions on the year for an underwhelming 118.3 QB rating, but that production vastly outpaced Bolden's effort: 46-109, 548 yards, one touchdown, four picks, and an 80.1 QB rating. Bolden was a highly-rated QB recruit and the first true freshman to ever start a game at quarterback for Joe Paterno, while McGloin was a former walk-on, but it's become readily apparent that McGloin has been the better quarterback over the last two seasons.

I guess McGloin's big mouth finally got his ass in trouble! I don't think Drake knocking him on his ass was right however, I understand it!

I think that there's a nugget of truth there about Penn State needing to get out of the limelight for a while.  Hire a coach, get it over with, and let the Sandusky trial take the headlines and let the program make waves behind the scenes to the delight of their alumni and fans.  There's just too much going on at PSU right now - too many negative headlines.  I KNOW that PSU is NOT like this - I've been there, I have friends who have and currently do go there, and I know that it is a WONDERFUL institution.

So - would it kill the football program to play a clean and scandal free bowl game?  No - they couldn't even make it to the game without a problem.  No - they couldn't do it because a selfish WR decided to knock out the starting QB.  PSU should have gone into the TicketCity bowl as a quiet underdog against offensive superpower Houston and the big news could have been PSU possibly shutting down Houston's vaunted offense with their equally as impressive (but less heralded) defense but a couple of very selfish players decided to hog the limelight in a situation that did not call for it and called for having a low profile.

I guess we can just heap this incident on the giant pile of crap that has been the 2011 FBS season for the Nittany Lions.  Unfortunately I think that your school's program is going to have a couple of years of distractions before you can return to being a solid Big 10 team.  I think that the PSU faithful will embrace the team and I bet that they will be understanding during these trying times.  It is going to be very hard for a head coach to take the job at PSU at this moment.  Honestly, if I were PSU's athletic director I would keep the interim staff in place until these charges against the hierarchy are settled (which are directly and indirectly allegations and charges condeming the PSU football program).  When Sandusky is likely found guilty of the charges against him, the atheltic department officials charged with perjury are convicted or acquitted, and the civil claims levied against PSU are paid out then, and only then, should the program hire a new head coach.  I would not be surprised if NCAA inquiries uncover addtional problems at PSU and at the very least they are hit with charges of "lack of institutional control" if the former AD and CFO are convicted of perjury.  I believe NCAA bylaws state that all institutions MUST cooperate with law enforcement and if they are found guilty it would mean that PSU's atheltic department is guilty of not cooperating.  I do not wish ill will against PSU, it's current administration, it's regents, it's students, or any of their sporting programs.  I do however wish ill for any person who would either directly or indirectly further the "career" of a known or at least accused child molester who retired early so he could focus his life on raising money to further his molestation of children.
