Texas A&M going after the Denver Broncos

On Sunday the Denver Broncos, and Tim Tebow in particular, were blowing the minds of football fans across the country while beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL playoffs. It was pretty much a wonderful day to be a Broncos fan, but it was also a day that may find the team in court soon.

That's because after the Broncos beat the Steelers in overtime there was this tweet from Texas A&M's Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jason Cook.

Yes, before the game a man parachuted into the stadium waving a flag that said "12th man" and the flag was waved during the game. Which seems completely harmless and pretty much commonplace, but Texas A&M owns the trademark for it and is planning on getting its money.

It's not the first time that the school has gotten involved in something like this, as it filed a lawsuit against the Seattle Seahawks in 2006 for the same thing. Now any Seahawks broadcasts that mention the crowd as "the 12th man" also has to mention Texas A&M's trademark.

Seems pretty stupid, right? Yeah, that's because it is, though there's also an easy solution. Instead of referring to your home crowd as "the 12th man" just start referring to them as "the 12th player." Then Texas A&M will have to find a whole new way to waste everybody's time.

Texas A&M going after the Denver Broncos

Boo Hoo.  Aggies are such cry babies.  First they run away from the Big 12 because the Longhorns have their own network - ending one of the greatest rivalries in college football, going back over a hundred years, and now they are trying to sue to keep the "12th Man" as their own.  That's like Donald Trump trying to patent "You're Fired."  It's patently absurd.  Now the little babies are gonna get their butts slapped around by the SEC, so they'll be doing a lot more crying.

This is why our country's IP laws are stupid.  It's ludicrous to consider that a team can't wave a flag that says "12th man" on it, absolutely ludicrous.  It's common across all sports to call fans or the team's bench or both the "(# of players + 1)th man", and money should never be involved.

Texas A&M going after the Denver Broncos

Welllll... the NFL tried to sue people over "who dat".... only some high school claims they coined the term in 1970s and I distinctly remember a prizefighter and his promogirls in the sports department one afternoon chanting, "who dat say dey gonna beat Joe...."

AND, didn't baseball threaten to sue little leagues for calling their teams yankees or tigers?  (My brother threatened a countersuit for calling an AL team the Bluejays..... hey, his high school has been using that sports name for more than 100 years now....)

Whole thing is stupid. 12th man certainly is TxAM&M.... but ... hell, are the Bengals gonna pay the saints over who dey? and will the saints pay St Aug for who dat??? no more than the Torontos are gonna pay Jesuit over the Bluejays....

I am no big aggie fan, but the "12th man" term comes from a story about one of their fans long ago, they have it trademarked, and have every right to protect it from any use not associated with a&m.

Wrong Jetsfan10, Seattle lost and if they use the phrase they have to say it is trademarked and owned by Texas A&M. That is not a win if you have to say that. You think Seattle still uses it?

They're going to need 12 men next year for a lot of their games!  Guess that is the reason for wanting to protect it.

Texas A&M going after the Denver Broncos

Why can't I just take any report from this website, change the authors name, and turn it in to my editor as my own?

Because you can intelligently connect more than one sentance into an intelligent paragrpah. We would all know you plagerized cBS. It taes a true idiot, like allblowing and Justanidiot to pull off that type of antic.

What's the big deal in that?  That's what you are advocating.

My thought is suing. Thats what I have a problem with. Someone mentioned that Seattle had done the same and all they had to do was acknowledge TAMI for it and both parties called it good. Now if the article said this, I'm sure myself and many others wouldn't have posted sarcastic remarks about this. Some of us do find it ridiculous to sue someone over 7 stupid letters and/or numbers. Asking for proper citation not so much.

Do none of you numnuts know this happened before with the Seahawks? Seattle won and got to continue using it and just had to acknowledge that TAMU had it first is all. Doub the Broncos win. If anything, the Seahawks have claim on it; not Denver.

Jason, did CBS wasste people's time when they sued over a trademark infringement? Just wondering, obviously the CBS brass are idiots for wasting time by suing. http://cbsbreakingnews.

albs/cad.txt or http://contracts.corporate.
fin
dlaw.com/operations/ip/461.html.  I guess it's ok for CBS to waste time suing for trademark infringement but not Texas A&M, is that right Jason?
