Texas A&M going after the Denver Broncos

On Sunday the Denver Broncos, and Tim Tebow in particular, were blowing the minds of football fans across the country while beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL playoffs. It was pretty much a wonderful day to be a Broncos fan, but it was also a day that may find the team in court soon.

That's because after the Broncos beat the Steelers in overtime there was this tweet from Texas A&M's Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jason Cook.

Yes, before the game a man parachuted into the stadium waving a flag that said "12th man" and the flag was waved during the game. Which seems completely harmless and pretty much commonplace, but Texas A&M owns the trademark for it and is planning on getting its money.

It's not the first time that the school has gotten involved in something like this, as it filed a lawsuit against the Seattle Seahawks in 2006 for the same thing. Now any Seahawks broadcasts that mention the crowd as "the 12th man" also has to mention Texas A&M's trademark.

Seems pretty stupid, right? Yeah, that's because it is, though there's also an easy solution. Instead of referring to your home crowd as "the 12th man" just start referring to them as "the 12th player." Then Texas A&M will have to find a whole new way to waste everybody's time.

Texas AM is fitting right in to the SEC; they possess the "Birthright" mentality.

Thats ridiculous, "12th man" is a way to pump up the crowd and make the fans feel involved, the Broncos were not profiting off it at all. This lawsuit is menial and petty. Teams better hurry before Texas A&M gets DE-FENSE and the "Noise-o-meter" too!

I am a life long Longhorn and believe TAMU should protect their trademark. They have been using it way before the Seahawks or Broncos were even created.Fornelli report on something that matters, and the Prophet he may have been blowing your small mind but not me,whats next only one more miracle after his death and is he going to be canonized.I guess he is a lock for the Hall, every team will retire his number and the Super Bowl will be renamed after him.Give me a break

i can understand about the man and the flag being trademarked but not just calling the fans the 12th man, that is done all the time in sports of all types. it does sound like they are  wanting money though or else they could ask for a public appology and acknowledgment.

They should do something more creative and make a flag that shows v--144 man.  That would probably go over well at Northwestern.

Try again. It was settled out of court with A&M retaining rights and Seattle paying for use.

Come on now bashers. This is how trademarks work. All these teams have them. Don't jump on one just because it may be against your team. Let someone print start using the Broncos logo or the like and see if they don't jump on it. It works both ways.
Major league baseball got all over Little League for using their team logos many years back making them pay for rights. Companies (yes teams are companies) have to protect their interest or people will take advantage of it.

They tried the same garbage with the Seahawks and lost!
I hope they lose again.
