Television ratings not kind to BCS title game

Did you watch Alabama beat LSU 21-0 to win the BCS Championship last night? If not, you weren't alone in finding your television entertainment elsewhere.

The overnight ratings for the BCS National Championship Game show that last night's rematch between Alabama and LSU was the lowest-rated title game in the 14-year history of the BCS, bringing in a 13.8 overnight rating, a 14% drop from last year's game between Auburn and Oregon. The previous low had been set in 2002 when Miami played Nebraska for the title and the game brought a 14.3 rating.

There are a few factors that were no doubt in play here. First of all, it seems many college football fans were serious when they said they didn't want to watch a rematch of a game they'd already seen, particularly one that ended 9-6 the first time and didn't exactly provide a lot of excitement. Another factor to consider is that the game was broadcast on ESPN, which is available on cable packages and previous BCS games had always been broadcast on national networks.

The low ratings for the title game followed the trend of the other four BCS bowls as well, as the average rating of all BCS games dropped 10% from the 2010 season and 21% from the 2009 season. Again, this is likely a combination of the games now being broadcast on cable and college football fans who are tiring of the bowl system.

The good news is that with all the momentum that already seems to be in place for the BCS to add a plus-one system in the coming years, the drop in ratings may provide an additional kick in the pants.

Television ratings not kind to BCS title game

Insomniacs could have been cured had they tuned in. Maybe the BCS will start to listen to what the people want - A real Playoff where the championships is won on the field.

You could see this one coming if you were standing on the moon. These teams being from the same conference meant the regional interest wouldn't be there outside of the South. Plus alot of SEC fans pawned their TVs to get to the game so the numbers were going to skew lower anyway.

Not all that surprising ratings were low. Rabid football fan, but the first half was boring with the outcome being obvious. SEC will not like this, but the Northeast where I live does not care at all about the SEC. From DC to Boston we have a ton of people. During football season you walk into a sports bar and you will see most with Big Ten games on. Pro sports are far more popular than college. Quite obvious when listening to sports talk radio. A good example is that the Philadelphia Newspaper barely covers Penn State football. No jokes needed about PSU. Did not go there.

bigdschell "If you do away with the bowl games college football won't survive! A playoff system wouldn't make even 1/10 amount of money that the bowl system makes!!"

Odd That the NCAA even admits a 16 team playoff would generate 3 to 4 times the money that the bowl system does.

See what happens, when you fix it to only include the BS... oops, the BcS` precious sec teams. Looks like everyone outside of the sec knew this was a BS game. Proves once again, there`s no difference between BS, and BCS

Now I hope all the sponsors drop their sponsorship and force the NCAA to get rid of this mythical championship game and institute a playoff system.  Another thing they need to get rid of is the month layoff between the end of the regular and the bowl games that is stupid no other sport's playoffs work that way........So congrats BCS your ship is sinking

Television ratings not kind to BCS title game

Thank everyone who did not watch this BCS farce for the sake of college football. We ALL deserve a playoff system and let everything be decided on the field and not with opinion polls. If Bama and LSU would have earned their spot through a playopff system, many more fans would have tuned in. Think about it, if pro football was run by the BCS, Denver never would have played the Steelers for Pitt would have been given the right to play NE due to opinion polls (86% favored Pitt). Maybe one day we will have our FIRST TRUE national championship but until then, all we can do is not participate. JOB WELL DONE TRUE LOVERS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL...BOYCOTT!

Television ratings not kind to BCS title game

Alabama is not the champion of the NCAA.  North Dakota State is.  They actually had to win their way into the title game in what's called a play-off.  The two best teams palyed in the championship, 13-1 North Dakota State vs. 14-0 Sam Houston State.  Terrific game, great defense, great offense, MULTIPLE TD's, good kicking, great coaching and great play.  They had to neat the best to get to the best.
Couldn't have said it better. North Dakota State isn't the best team in the country, but it is the champion in 2012, no matter what Alabama says. Just like the title Alabama likes to say it won in 2010 actually belongs to the Wildcats of Villanova.
