Brian Kelly gets a two-year extension

Notre Dame announced on Tuesday that it had exercised the option on Brian Kelly's contract that extended his deal through the 2016 season.

"While Coach Kelly and I are focused on the additional work that must be done to reach our goals, I am very pleased with the progress we have made during the past twoyears.” said athletic director Jack Swarbrick in a statement.

"Our football team’s performance on the field, in the classroom, and in the community reflect Coach Kelly’s commitment to building a program that will be able to sustain success in the long run, and to doing so in a manner consistent with Notre Dame’s values and tradition."

Kelly's first two seasons in South Bend haven't brought the return to national prominence that the school and fans had been hoping for, as the Irish have gone 16-10. Along with consecutive 8-5 seasons, the Irish also find themselves in the same boat as they did last offseason, getting ready to head into spring practice without a starter at quarterback as Tommy Rees is expected to compete with Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson in the offseason following the transfer of Dayne Crist to Kansas.

Kelly has also seen three of his assistants leave to take jobs elsewhere, though the school also announced two-year deals for all the assistants that remain on his staff.

On the positive side of things, Notre Dame has seen a lot of improvement on the defensive side of ball thanks to the recruits that Kelly and his staff have brought in. The real question, however, is if Kelly will be around through the end of his contract and if Notre Dame will finally start living up to the lofty expectations routinely placed on the team.

Eight-win seasons will only keep the peace for so long.

HonestIrish.......Having a top 15 recruiting class every year doesn't make a heal of difference of how a team performs.  If you go back through the top 25 football rankings at end of the last 10 seasons and you will find several teams that are there every year who did not have a top 15 recruiting class each of those years.
The facts are there, because in todays 85 football scholarship limit in the FBS there is much parity where many teams are better than they were 15 years ago.  Now, I'm not saying the top 5 recruiting programs do not have a better advantage, but look at Texas for instance, they always are in the top 8 recruiting classes, yet they haven't proved it on the field. Things have changed greatly in college football in terms of parity and competition.
I have many Notre Dame friends who I have know for years, I'm 69 years old.  I know it is hard to change.
However, Notre Dame needs to be in a football conference for a number of reasons. One, your team would compete throughout the entire football season for a conference championship.  ND would have say 9 conference games and 3 out of conference games. Two, being in a conference would build a stronger desire to compete, just like the Irish competes now in basketball in the BE.  It doesn't matter what football conference ND would choose, you just need to be in a conference in this day and time in the FBS.  I think sometimes your AD may be the problem in not understanding the reality of the current situation with Irish football, it's like a floundering ship out in the open sea. No one at Notre Dame wants to change their independence in football, TRY A CONFERENCE; YOU MAY LIKE THE COMPETITION.

I think the notre dame nation needs to take a deep breath and relax.  I think we as fans think ND should compete for a national championship EVERY year.  Well let me break the news to you.  The talent level of the 22 players on the field was nowhere near able to compete.  We as fans need to realize that we werent a player or two away from a national championship but were 3 or 4 great recruiting classes away.  Sure BK screwed up the Dayne Christ/Tommy Rees scenerio but anyone can see we are getting better, especially on the defensive side of the ball.  I see progress and i see the disappointing losses.  Kelly will turn the ship around, it just will take longer than most want.

Ok since it seems almost everyone is a coaching expert Undecided and knows how to fix the Irish then how many more years do you give Kelly (personal feelings aside) before you can him?  And when you do who would you hire?  I for one would hold onto Kelly for at least close to the end of his extension then....(yes you can start laughing now...but keep in mind I'm just having some fun with this) the bank vaults and hire Nick Saban.  Yes I know it would never happen but he would be near the end of his extension by then and if Irish fans would ever want a high profile coach that knew how to win Saban would be the guy! (hey one can dream right?? lol)

Steelfan - Great call on the announcing.  I often wonder for a school with an endowment approaching 11 figures, an 8 figure NBC contract, and ticket sales/lottery proceeds approaching $100 million per year; how much could it really cost to bring in real broadcast talent?  Brent seems to be losing his edge over on ABC/ESPN, maybe we can bring him in for a stop-gap.  Also, watch the pre-game; between Mayock's lisp and Tom's awkward lean forward like he is about to have an embarassing adult moment; it is just downright torture.  Don't we have someone from the Olympics telecast that we can borrow for 8 hours every other Saturday?  Throw a few hundred grand at Costas for 6 days of work; it can't get any worse.

I am an ND fan.  I do not like Kelly.  I question his ability to beat elite competition and close out winnable games.  He had beaten one team that finished in the AP Top 20 his entire coaching career until Michigan State this year.  That momentum was wiped out by a beat down at the hands of USC, a hapless effort against Stanford, and a choke against FSU.  Super.

That being said, for the Anti-ND nation out there, please explain how joining a conference will fix the Irish's woes.  Seriously, I don't get the logic.  ND is still landing Top 15 recruiting classes, Top 10 at times.  ND has plenty of money.  ND still has the NBC deal, maybe not as lucrative as in the past but still one of the most profitable college programs.  The academics are Top 20.  The facilities are state of the art.  So, if ND has all these things already, what is joining a conference going to do?  I am serious.  I think it comes down to coaching all 3 phases of the game.  Ty wasn't bad at defense and terrible at offense and recruiting.  Weis recruited and coached offense well; but his teams were soft and played poor defense.  Kelly has improved the defensive talent but the offense has not come together.  It's coaching, not conference.

And everyone needs to give up on the strength of schedule garbage.  Our "cupcakes" are the military academies, highly respected educational institutions that play solid football.  They are tougher than all of the D-1AA mop-up wins that most teams play in August and September.  In the past two years, per Jeff Sagarin's analysis, ND has been Top 25 in strength of schedule.  Do they play the SEC West?  No, but their schedule is still better than 80% of the NCAA.  On paper, 2012 looks like a Top 10 schedule with Michigan, MSU, Stanford, Oklahoma, USC, and Miami.  And our "Cupcakes" include Pitt, Purdue, BYU, Navy (in Ireland), Boston College, and Wake Forest; all BCS schools, over half of which went to a Bowl last year.
