Charlie Weis has found his defensive coordinator.

Kansas announced in a press release on Friday that Dave Campo has been brought on to run the defense in Lawrence. The 64-year old Campo has plenty of coaching experience on both the collegiate and professional levels. He began his coaching career at Central Connecticut State in 1971 and made stops at schools like Pitt, Washington State, Boise State, Oregon State, Iowa State and Syracuse.

Campo was a secondary coach under Jimmy Johnson at Miami from 1987 to 1988 before moving on to the NFL with Johnson to the Dallas Cowboys.

He's been in the NFL ever since, and was even the head coach of the Cowboys for three years from 2000 to 2002. After losing his job there he moved on to the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to Dallas to coach the secondary the last four years.

You may have people that know Texas, but my question is "do you have people that know how to coach?"  One of these guys has failed at every stop he has made.

Let's hope he does as good a job at Kansas as he did with the Dallas secondary.  Hook'em.

Campo doesn't need to remember how to recruit. All he and Weis has to do is call players from their desk and say "So you coming? or not?". Campo is going to get a lot of players from Texas just with his name alone not including Weis's. RCJH!

I personally liked the hiring of Grunny over Weis, but I've always liked him.  Campo was a great hire. Having NFL ties on both sides of the ball can only help with recruiting.  NFL ties in TX is better still given that every school in the Big 12 relies heavily on TX for its players

wow ku is hiring a name i have heard before. you an get all the old guys with reps and the coach from miege. they porobaly all will be good coaches. what is need now is at least one good recruiter.  with texas a & m, and that traitor mizzou (not that anybody will miss them).   ku nees a good recruiter from texas. a good selling point, why go the sec and lose and get beat black and blue. come play for a charlie weis offense and have fun. weis needs to realize he is not in new england and tom brady is not his quarterback. right now there is no pressure on weis. the more i think about it, this is a good career move for weis.
@ KUBBFAN, like your name says, stick to basketball.

The coach from Bishop Miege, as you put it, is Tim Grunhard, former OL for the Chiefs and an NFL Pro-Bowler.

Rob Ianello, WR coach, is considered one of the top 25 recruiters in college football.

Reggie Mitchell is also one of the elite recruiters in college football.

Clint Bowen was a solid DB coach for KU under Bill Young, did not do well as DC, but he knows the Dallas area.

Dave Campo was the Cowboys Secondary coach. And you think we don't have people that know the state of Texas!

Please leave the discussion to actual fans of KU football.

SMURPH .... Lets see Kansas had the #1 Strength of schedule in all of college football, wonder if that had anything to do with the defense ranking so low.

Good hire considering where Kansas was defensively last year. Campo is steady, not flashy. Hope he dusts off his recruiting skills.
