Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

College football underclassmen have until January 15th to declare themselves eligible for the draft, and we have a rather surprising declaration with only a few hours to go before that deadline hits. Oregon announced on Saturday night that quarterback Darron Thomas has decided to forego his senior season in Eugene and will instead enter the NFL Draft.

“I came to this decision on behalf of myself and my family,” Thomas said in the official release. “I have a dream of playing in the NFL and I’m going to pursue those dreams.

“I would like to thank everyone in Oregon for all their support and I would thank the coaches for all their help, especially Coach (Chip) Kelly. I love my teammates and wish them the best of luck, and am confident they will continue the winning tradition that has been established. Last but not least, I thank all the Oregon fans for their help and support.”

It's a move that was so unexpected that Thomas isn't even listed among's position rankings at quarterback. Which makes it hard to predict where Thomas would go in the draft, if at all.

Thomas threw for 5,910 yards and 66 touchdowns during his career with the Ducks, all while completing 61.2% of his passes.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

You have heard first hand?  And I am going to the moon later today!  Isn't it fun when you can just say things?   Good try, you have not heard ANYTHING first hand.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

This is bad, this has heartbreak written all over it. A young man with success at a large university competeing on a national stage every week. The only thing missing here is FUNDAMENTALS, this poor guy ran a gimmick offense that will never be applied to the NFL and has probably only taken a handful of snaps under center. I can already see him sitting in New York in some crazy colored suit Nike made waiting for his name to be called and round after round going by. Winning games doesnt mean your good as an individual that goes to the team and the style they play, Coach Kelly wins games and may produce some good NFL players but QB isnt one of them. Darron should go back and prepare with his last year on all the things he needs to make a good PRO QB not college QB.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Truth is it wouldn't have mattered if he was to stay for his senior year or not. He is not an NFL quarterback and never will be. He plays in that wacky, quacky offense in Eugene, where there is no offensive structure. When he gets to the NFL, he will be required to get under the center a lot more and audible out of bad plays. All they do at Oregon is outrace their opponents. Therefore, they're allowed to run some very basic plays. It won't be like that in the NFL. He'll see that the defenses are much faster, and the players are much more experienced than what he's seen before. He's been able to throw to much wider windows at Oregon because of their speed. He'll find those windows real tight in the NFL. He's never been a QB in a structured offense before. It'll be all new to him.

Mistake! Hes not gonna get drafted anywhere where money can be made this year. He should have stuck around just in case something happens to Matt Barkley. The truth is there will be plenty of other QBs ahead of him in this draft but with another season he couldve broken through the pack instead of being under an Andrew Luck, RG3 type of ceiling.

However, a certain Mr. Bennett will be EVEN better, running the Oregon spread offense.

Respectfully (which is something you lack), if he was so great then he would have been ahead of thomas on the depth chart. Potential and two bucks will buy you a cup of coffee.

As for your claim to fame QB's....were you even born when they were around?

QB factory....good one!

Spoiled children? Perhaps you've forgotten about Nike? Too funny!

I doubt Oregon will get hit to hard from the NCAA. The QB situation in Oregon is not a concern, He will be missed but I think that knee is likely a reason. He would have had a monster team and could have worked on his passing skills. Maybe he just needs the money, lord knows if I could could make that kind of coin, I would give it shot. He is a lot better than people think. 5 round, you could do worse. He was fun to watch play, he brought a rose bowl to Eugene, he is highly thought of there.

Whagt if both predictions were correct?  That Oregon won't get hit by sanctions, but that Thomas isn't on the projected hit list for the draft.  Despite the wonderful confidence which Prisco and company like to spout off about what they know about who will/won's make it in the NFL, we all know that the draft is more or less a crapshoot, period.  Obviously we can feel pretty good about certain players at the collegiate level, as there was hardly a doubt for example that Ndamakong Suh was going to make it.  But as you get away from the obvious choices, it gets less and less clear.  So good luck to Darron Thomas.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

For all of you speculating that Oregon is going to get hit by sanctions are waaaaaaay off.  First of all, Thomas already has his degree.  Second, his backup this year, Bennett, has more potential than Thomas.  He is faster, stronger and better passer.  He will be a junior next year and would seriously push Thomas for playing time.

Thomas is making a business decision.  Even if he signs a free agent contract that's still 390k base salary.  Maybe go to the CFL.  One more year at Oregon isn't going to change his draft status.  He's chasing his dream.  Good for him.  Whether he succeeds or not is up to him.  But don't criticize him for not giving it a shot.

Oregon is fine a quarterback.  Clemens was replaced by Dennis Dixon, who was replaced by Jeremiah Masoli, who was replaced by Thomas. Thomas will be replaced by Bennett.  The beat goes on for Oregon.  WTD!

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Are you all really too dumb to see…Oregon is going to get
hit hard by the NCAA for their violations before next season.  Why else would a QB be leaving that’s not
even projected anywhere in the draft.  I
have heard first hand that the NCAA is coming and Oregon will pay for their
illegal activities.  If schools such as
Boise State and Ohio State are going to get in trouble for the things they have
done then nobody even knows what is about to hit the University of Oregon.  The players such as Darron Thomas that have
chance want out cause they don’t want to have to pay the price come next
year.  And to Cosby who wrote about the
great U of O QB’s in the NFL such as Fouts and others…who are you even talking
about, Akili Smith and Joey Harrington?
Yep they are good lol.  Sorry
Oregon fans but there will be no post season or championship next year unless
Uncle Phil pays off the NCAA.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Something isnt right here. We will never know. Is it Darron's relationship with Chip? This is an extremely odd decision. Four QB finished ahead of Darron in the Pac 12 for 2011. Luck, Barkley, Foles and Price. Yes Oregon won the Rose Bowl ad thats great but lets not get too full ourselves. This starts Oregon OUT of the top 10. That sucks.
