Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

College football underclassmen have until January 15th to declare themselves eligible for the draft, and we have a rather surprising declaration with only a few hours to go before that deadline hits. Oregon announced on Saturday night that quarterback Darron Thomas has decided to forego his senior season in Eugene and will instead enter the NFL Draft.

“I came to this decision on behalf of myself and my family,” Thomas said in the official release. “I have a dream of playing in the NFL and I’m going to pursue those dreams.

“I would like to thank everyone in Oregon for all their support and I would thank the coaches for all their help, especially Coach (Chip) Kelly. I love my teammates and wish them the best of luck, and am confident they will continue the winning tradition that has been established. Last but not least, I thank all the Oregon fans for their help and support.”

It's a move that was so unexpected that Thomas isn't even listed among's position rankings at quarterback. Which makes it hard to predict where Thomas would go in the draft, if at all.

Thomas threw for 5,910 yards and 66 touchdowns during his career with the Ducks, all while completing 61.2% of his passes.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

I'm absolutely shocked, but there has to be something else here.  Everyone knows he won't get a big payday in the draft.  He might get drafted, sure, but I think that he was feeling more threatened by Bennett competing for a starting spot than anything else.  After the Rose Bowl victory, maybe he thought it was time to step aside for Bennett, go out on top, and further his career.

I wish him all the luck in the world.  Some of his passes are just mindblowingly awesome, but he has a little too many random overthrows.  I see potential!  Not only in Thomas, but also for the future of Oregon football.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Yeah, I was shocked. One of the best things about the Oregon program is that we usually don't recruit players who are good enough to leave early (ha ha) so we get them all 4 years.

The only thing we are a factory of is running backs.

As for Thomas, on one play he will throw a pass 10 feet over the receivers head on a mid-range crossing pattern, then on the next play he will throw the most beautiful long fade route pass in the corner of the end zone that you have ever seen.

It's funny though, because he can have a game where you think he played kind of so-so, but then when you look at the stat sheet it looks like a really good game. He also had a dreadful set of receivers who dropped a ton of passes this season. Tuinei picked a great time to have the game of his career in the Rose Bowl.

This move does make me nervous for the potential violations. On the other hand, he did have a knee injury and the NFL seems to be moving toward more mobile QBs, so who knows.

And yes, we will be fine if not better with Bryan Bennett who looks like an absolute stud.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

People have already brought this up but obviously we are not getting the whole story here. Thomas is NOT an nfl ready quarterback at all. He's also not athletic enough to play another position. He is finished playing football unless we're counting the semi-pro leagues where guys smoke cigs on the sideline. Clearly there is something else afoot here.

That said, I saw the backup play last year and Oregon didn't fall off at all. In anything they have a more dangerous run threat because dude can fly. This is a very surprising turn of events however.    &nb

Easy Webfoot!
Yeah i have heard of those guys thank you but who are the other guys. More than that who are the recent guys? Im not saying they dont send guys to the league but who was the last 1 round pick that turned out to be a stud in the league.... Akili Smith? Yeah some of these guys have held jobs for a while but thats not what im talking about. Im talking stars, im talking household names and Im also talking recent. Thomas did great but should have stayed one more year. I hope that his career doesnt end before it begins because he never gets a chance to show what he can do. As a senior he would have had a chance to do that but he wasnt the star on the team this year and so he wasnt the guy getting all the attention. I am excited to see what happens when the Ducks come to So Cal. Spoiled children huh? We arent the ones with Nike in our backyard, state of the art facilities, locker rooms and 4 million uniform combinations. Sounds like you guys might be a little more spoiled. Trust me i root for the Ducks when they arent playing SC or Washington so im not a hater but at the same time the facts show that Oregon is not a QB factory for the NFL.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Oregons system will give them the chance to still be atop the conference. I do think that they will have one heck of a battle against the Trojans and possibly Washington next year. Those are probably going to be the toughest games. Luckily they will get the Huskies at home but will have to head down to USC which will be a big game. Cal is having a great recruiting class as of now and they could be a surprise. New coaches in the conference also may provide surprises plus nobody knows what Stanford will look like next year so it could be a good one. I dont know what the reasons for Thomas to declare were but for it to be such last second is why im suspicious. I do agree that the buzz around LA is big because of Barkley returning and it would not be the same if he had left. Our future will be just fine when he leaves. We have been good enough when it comes to bringing in Top QB recruits. I could be totally wrong though because i heard also that your backups are better QBs anyway so there may actually be no change and in fact you may be better than you were with Thomas. Heres to a fun season.

Oregon's Darron Thomas entering NFL Draft

Gotta love misguided USC fan saying Oregon doesn't put out quality NFL quarterbacks. Hello McFly??? Will Please wake up. Ever hear of Van Brocklin or Fouts along with many others, who have held NFL jobs for many, many years.
Darron Thomas led Oregon to the stratosphere with a BCS Championship appearance and ended 95 years of Rose Bowl frustration with a huge win Jan. 2. Of course, his NFL prospects may not be the brightest. However, a certain Mr. Bennett will be EVEN better, running the Oregon spread offense. Can't wait until Nov. 3 when Oregon visits the Univeristy of Spoiled Children in their own place and wins its fourth consecutive league title. We also look forward to when make a return visit for the Pac-12 championship later in the month. First one to 60 wins!

Unlike USC our future next year does not hinge on our QB returning.  I loved DT but he had a horrible throwing motion and he missed some wide open throws.  A lot of people say that we have two better QBs on the roster already.

So....  Good luck to USC and the rest of Pac 12 when Oregon can run the zone read again with a QB run threat.
