Less than a week after announcing the "mutual" exit of Todd Bradford, Maryland has found the next defensive coordinator for Randy Edsall's staff. On Tuesday, the school announced the hiring of Houston defensive coordinator Brian Stewart..

"I'm very pleased to have Brian come on board," Edsall said in the official release. "He is a proven defensive coordinator at both the collegiate and professional level. All of his experience will help us move forward as we look for him to implement his aggressive style. He will also be a great addition to our recruiting efforts."

Stewart, 47, spent the last two seasons as Kevin Sumlin's defensive coordinator at Houston. The Cougars used a 3-4 scheme under Stewart, and were 18-8 in his time on staff. Stewart spent eight seasons as an assistant in the NFL, highlighted by a two-year stint as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator in 2007-2008. He has primarily worked with defensive backs, the same position he played at Northern Arizona.

"I'm excited to join Randy's staff," Stewart said. "I admired what he did at UConn and saw the beginning of that transformation while I was at Syracuse. We've taken similar career paths as secondary coaches and then coordinators. It will be an exciting new challenge implementing our defense in the ACC, a very competitive league and one of the traditional BCS conferences."

Maryland ranked 74th nationally in passing defense (237.4 yards per game) and dead last in the ACC in total defense. The aggressive offseason plans to rebuild around head coach Randy Edsall have included changeovers at both coordinator positions. Mike Locksley was announced as the Terrapins offensive and recruiting coordinator in December, and now Stewart joins the staff with two weeks left until National Signing Day. Stewart's NFL experience will no doubt be a selling point for prospects as the Terps look to lock up a talented group of local prospects in the final days of recruiting.

Maryland hires Houston DC Brian Stewart

An odd football school....old glory days were 60 years ago and they've chased those echoes for years and years now. I thought Freidgen was worthy of being an institution there...He drained every ounce of talent out of the kids willing to go to a school more interested in basketball and lacrosse...so now Edsall sees what he's faceing...you gotta win there, atleast beat the dukes, nc states always, and win at home against virginia, navy, miami...they almost lost to Towson...that won't fill the seats.

Fans better chill out and let him find the staff that's gonna work for him, especially to bring in some of the local talent that Freidgen had a knack for snagging a few good ones. The school is an academic power house and sports that reflect that ethic of excellence will be supported...otherwise Byrd Stadium will continue empty early and only fill for regional draws like The Naval Academy.

For me, I don't care who he hires...big name, little name...just guys who can draw the regional talent and be competitive with class...Freidgen's big shoes are clearly on display.    &nb

GJ Teprs, you paid double what WVU was willing to offer him. And the funniest thing, you had to cut 7 NCAA teams this year. How does a school that is hurting for cash be able to pay all that money for a d coordinator?

Report: Maryland to hire Houston DC Brian Stewart

Really?!?  While Maryland's defense was pretty poor this season, landing the D-coordinator of the team that ranked 61st overall is the best solution you could come up with?

Brian Stewart might be a really nice guy who brings some class and respectability to the program but I have to question what Randy Edsall is doing in landing the leader of a defense that ranked in the bottom half of the all BCS teams.  The record of the team while he was on staff at Houston is irrelevant to his qualifications and abilities to lead Maryland's defense.  There isn't a college football fan in the country that doesn't remember that it's been the Case Keenum show in Houston for the last few years and that program has always been all about putting more points on the board than your opponent.  Good luck, Terrapin fans -- you're gonna need it!

cffl- Solid comments . The Terps AD shares some blame for this debacle. I still don't what was wrong with another year of Fridge than the Coach in waiting Franklin (now @ Vandy) taking the reins.

Maryland fans should be very suspect of Edsall's judgement with respect to coaching hires.

Crowton & Bradford did not work out in the first season.

Locksley was an abject failure as a Head Coach @ New Mexico ... brought in specifically for his PAST success as a recruiter for Illinois and Florida of the Washington, DC metro area.  But Maryland is already the largest presence in that area.  And I do not recall any outcry for Locksley after he was fired @ New Mexico.

So why should Maryland fans trust that Stewart is qualified?  What is so special about the Houston defense?

I know Edsall signed a long term contract, but he probably only has this year to prove himself worthy.

Are the Terps sure this is a good move hiring the Cougar's DC? Oh, well are the Terps sure that hiring Edsall was a good move?
