Joe Paterno, the man who for decades was synonymous with the powerhouse Penn State football program, is reportedly in declining health. Onward State, the student-run Penn State website, reported on Saturday that Paterno had been taken off his respirator that morning, according to a source close to the family. Further, a report by Tom McAndrew of Blue White Illustrated indicates that Paterno's extended family has been summoned to the hospital.

If those reports are true, Paterno likely has, at best, a matter of days to live. It may be even shorter than that, as Mike Sisak of the Citizens' Voice in Wilkes-Barre is reporting that Paterno is "near death."

"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," said Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

It was only a week ago that Paterno gave his first interview since his November firing at the height of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. In it, interviewer Sally Jenkins noted that Paterno was wheelchair-bound, wearing a wig, and reduced to whispers due to his battle with lung cancer. Further, Paterno is 85, and most people that age aren't able to begin and win a fight with a disease like lung cancer. Still, Jenkins also noted that Paterno remained sharp, and his familiar tone and personality are evident in the interview snippets that were posted online.

CBSSports.com will provide more details as they become available, as this is a developing situation.

Jeff Smoker .... your facts are not a fact, its not a fact until there is some proof that anything happened and at this point you have no clue, just like the rest of us what really happened. All you have is what is said in the media, the same media that crucified Fine that is now having to say oops we screwed up.

Ittexasvwhen were you in pa to take the state mandated seminar to address what steps could be taken in instances such as what happened at penn state? I have first hand experience and knowledge and a certificate of completion for the seminar. Unless they changed the responsibities in the last decade. Can you really say and believe that joe couldn't have done more? For all the good he did and he did many good things he will be rememberd for this limited action.

To all the idiots who can't read the english language and puke JOPAS words about doing more here is a lesson for you... Joepa said this exactly..."This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."  OKAY..I hope you read that a few times. Now listen to me. A shrink said 95% of humans if told a friend of 30 years was raping a boy by an inferior would confront the friend and dismiss with the lie. But Joepa didn't do that he reported what he was told to the head of police at Penn St. 1 year later he reported what he was told to the Grand Jury. He did the unthinkable to a friend with no factual evidence! Would you? Would you? Now when JoePa said, "with the benefit of hindsight" that means if he had known what everyone knows NOW, HE WOULD HAVE DONE MORE! Am I the only sane person alive??? Someone help me?

tarnish a living legend
So he coached a stupid football team. He may be a legend for members of NAMBLA but not for the regular folk.
