Mack Brown to get a contract extension

If you were still holding onto those "Mack Brown to retire" rumors that seem to pop up just about every year, well, sorry to crush your dreams.

The Austin American-Statesman is reporting that Texas is about to give Mack Brown a four year extension. That would extend Brown's contract through the 2020 season.

The extension will also give Brown a $100,000 raise every year. He currently makes $5.2 million a year at Texas.

Now whether or not this extension will actually end the retirement rumors that seem to pop up every December and January as the recruiting season approaches its end, I doubt it. They first began popping up when Will Muschamp was named the "head coach in waiting," and even though Muschamp is no longer waiting to be a head coach, and at a different school entirely, I doubt the rumors will come to an end.

Of course, you can also wonder if Mack Brown will still be coaching at Texas by the time this deal ends. Not just because he's 60-years old, but because his Longhorns are 13-12 in the last two seasons. If that trend continues, retirement or not, I don't think Brown will be at Texas too much longer.

Yeah I know....I've lived there. If Austin was anywhere near as good as it thought it was we would call it heaven. Traffic is horrible, too many hippies, too much horrible music, people like dogs more than people and let them crap everywhere.
Hey, that's a good QB you guys have, 8 INT's and 4 TD's...awesome.

No, we don't care. That is why we show up late and leave early. It's really more about the tailgating and social aspect of the game. Just get us some wins here and there against OU, a bowl game and a NC every so often. There are more bars, restaurants and movie theatres per capita in Austin than any other city in the country. Not to mention hundreds of thousands of beautiful women, lakes, climbing, biking, etc. That is why we don't sit sround being lame bragging about the rest of the conference and which is the better tv channel.

I like how UT thinks Brown is a good coach because he's only had "1" losing season. Never mind he always has great recruiting classes in the best H.S. football state in the U.S. This guy, if he was any good should be competing for a BCS CHAMPIONSHIP every year especially in that Div II conference they play in.

Evidently UT doesn't care! They don't care about winning either I suppose since they extended Whack Brown. Good for you, that you had VY come along. Oh yeah, you had Colt but he got a little dinged by one of the SEC defenses huh, and had to "have a catch" with dad in the bowels of the stadium to realize he couldn't play. You T sippers are a bunch of liberal, animal loving, underachievers. Come on over to the S E C and get a REAL network like CBS. OH wait, that's right you weren't invited because the SEC wanted an upgrade so they invited A/M and Mizzou. Have fun playing Iowa State and Kansas.

Mack Brown consistently gets top 10 recruiting classes yet consistently finishes out of the Top 10 post Vince Young. To me this shows they don't really "coach 'em up" in Longhorn Land. UT is so arrogant, it's nice to see them fall on hard times. I hope they lose another 4 or 5 games next year in that pathetic conference they play in.

It's pretty standard on cbs for posters to write about teams and get facts wrong. I got a laugh when one wrote that there hasn't been a decent RB at UT since the 90's, just too funny. Before Mack came to UT, the best players in Texas went to other school and out of state. What's really funny is why fans of other schools would care about UT.<br />

One losing season during his career at Texas. One. There is a reason many of you don't work in CFB. That is because you are morons. LSU fan: Coming off the most embarrasing loss in BCSNCG history, you should shut your blowhole.

Mack Brown to get a contract extension

I actually like Mack Brown, but as a football coach he's barely above average.  First of all, you could hire a monkey at Texas and they would still have a top 5 recruiting class every year.  Brown has done less with more than any coach I can think of.  I'm not a big Boise St. fan, but I can't help but believe that if a coach like Petersen was at UT with the talent that Brown gets, they would have a boatload of NC titles.  Before the Bama-Texas title game, I didn't know that Brown and Saban were the same age.  Brown looks like he could be Saban's father, but Saban makes Brown look like his red headed stepchild.  Talk about a return on your investment, Saban makes less than Brown but he's turned Bama around from being a probation ridden program which was still sinking lower into the nation's hottest football powerhouse in 5 short years.  Texas still has the highest revenue (especially after their big TV deal), but Alabama is now a sure fire hot TV ratings machine (unlike UT, they have to share that revenue with the rest of the conference along with bowl payouts), and their merchandising revenue is going through the roof.

Although I'm comparing Brown with Saban, there are many more head coaches around the nation who are head and shoulders above Mack.  He doesn't have to recruit, and its almost shameful that he's squandered all that great talent by the inability to develop and impliment it.  Honestly, if I was a Longhorn fan, I'd be up in arms about keeping Brown around for even one more year, much less four.  I can name at least 6 SEC programs who would have already shown him the door for UT's showing the last two seasons.  Texas isn't suppose to "rebuild"....EVER.  They re-load, and I can only see one reason for a losing season and that is the head coach.  I can see Boise St. winning a national title before UT as long as Brown is the coach.
