The Big 12 still looking to expand

Maybe you thought conferences were done expanding after all the movement we saw before the 2011 season started. After all, nobody was shuffling the deck during the season. Then on Tuesday it was announced that Navy would be joining the Big East for the 2015 season, and it looks like the dominoes have started falling again.

According to The Chronicle (subscription), the Big 12 is once again considering expanding the conference. While nothing is imminent, two sources told the paper that the Big 12 adding at least one new member is "very possible."

That new member would likely be Louisville, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Before it was announced that West Virginia would be joining the conference, there were reports that half the schools were split on which school they wanted to extend an invitation to. Half wanted West Virginia, half wanted Louisville.

An expansion committee plans to put together a report for the Big 12's Board of Directors next week. Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds, Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis, and Kansas State president Kirk Schulz make up the committee.

“I don’t want to send the message, ‘Oh, they’re getting ready to expand,’” Castiglione told The Chronicle. “But you’d be naïve to think there’s not instability still in our business.

“From a transition standpoint, we’re in position now to deal with the reality of our world. We’re going to make some evaluations and reach the best conclusion that helps us stabilize our long-term future.”

The conference seems willing to stay at 11 teams, much like the Big Ten did for years, if it adds Louisville, but if the return of a Big 12 championship game is the ultimate goal, it will have to add a twelfth school. As for which school that would be, BYU is being mentioned as a possibility again. Cincinnati has also been mentioned as an option in the past as well.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

this might be wishful thinking...but why not go after BYU & Notre Dame? Give them an enticing deal to bring them in and lets say after 4 years, level the $$$ field to would legitimaize the Big XII and give them their 12 teams...

Having said that? Who else does the Big East raid if Louisville leaves? Recall Temple from the MAC? and what kind of commitment will the Big East have in their football teams to be a legit conference?

If we add Louisville, then we need a 12th team. A solid 12th team would be Northern Illinois.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

I think Louisville is the easiest choice for the Big 12, solid programs and close to the other Big 12 schools. The question is who would they go after next? BYU draws the best but can be tough to deal with. The program is making good money as an INDY and might be better off calling their own shots.

Cincy has a small stadium but good teams. I dont think they get the respect they have earned over the last decade.

Rutgers good coach, big market, program heading in the right direction. If basketball figures into this a liability.

USF provides a team in the best area to recrit Florida. Doesnt draw as well as it should, basketball average at best.

If two more teams are poached from the Big East what becomes of the league? Six of the football playing schools in the Big East came from CUSA Louisville, USF, Cincy, now SMU, UH, and UCF. IMO the basketball schools along with ND should go their seperate ways.

I would form a new 16 team football league where you could take the Big East schools and cherry pick the rest of what the country has to offer.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

If the Big 12 decides to expand is there really any doubt that Louisville is in. The only question is who will be the 12th. school. And Neinas has said that the conference has even consider 11 schools like the Big 10 did for years. But i do not like the idea of that. Hopefully they will not go that route. So who could be the 12th. team.

BYU would be a great choice, but will not give up their TV rights so that want happen. They could bring in Cincy but there is concerns of Revenue issues. But it would give WVU another dance partner and rival. And if they are looking at both Big East teams they need to make a move before the sign over their TV rights to the Big East.

Some other choices. Pittsburgh, why not try to get Pitt before they sign with the ACC. Would they come to the Big 12 over the ACC?
If you want to think about B-Ball you could think about U-Conn, to add WVU, Louisville , U-Conn the B-Ball jumps to the 2nd. Best Conference.
Houston or SMU, don't believe the Texas schools want any more Texas schools.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

The Big 12 knows the extra money that results from a championship game, which only happens when their total teams matches their name.  Adding Louisville and BYU would be a good fit and allow that to happen.

The possible divisional alignment could be:

Big 12 North:  BYU, Kansas, Kansas St., WVU, Louisville, Iowa St.
Big 12 South: Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor,  Oklahoma, Oklahoma St.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

i think having west virginia in the big 12 is great. if they can ass louisville then that would be ggood too. a good trade. mizzou and nebraska and those vcrazy people at a @m gone is a good dealo  for a @ m to be so jealous of texas show how childish and immature the leaders at a 2 m are. then go to the sec where they will lose most of their games. not just next year, but for a long time. cannon fodder for the good sec teams serves them right.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

You have got to be kidding. The little east is no more important than the mountain west or sunbelt. They should be in division 2. They are the joke of dividion 1 football!!!

The Big 12 still looking to expand

UL is a no brainer, they bring quality and commitment long term( keep in mind programs like UL, TCU and WVU will now have more money to grow their programs with)after that the B12 can go for tv market as UL, TCU, and WVU don't bring that to the table. With that in mind and Cincy always having to deal with tOSU's shadow for numbers ,Rutgers may actually be the better choice.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

Your makign this up as you go !   The BE average attendance is about 45K league wide.  And Rutgers had the highest ever college game in the NY City market in 2006 against Louisville with a rating of 9.2.   That is a huge selling point to execs.

The Big 12 still looking to expand

What a joke, everyone on here acting like the BE is not a good enough conference for a BCS bid.  The Big east is 7-7 in BCS games while the ACC is like 2-13 during the last decade.   The Bid East is underrated, and the perception that it is below the Moutain West is laughable.  There is no depth in the MWC, while the LAST place team beat WVU in a blowout this year.   No chance that ever happening in the MWC.
