When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Do you know anything about Notre Dame at all?  In fact, the athletes attend the same classes, eat in the same dining halls, and live in the same dorms as the other students.  And there is no separate "college" for them.  A degree from Notre Dame, which 98% of football players WILL get, will take these young men a lot further in life than a degree from LSU - which, as Mr Miles was so "proud" to point out, only 76% of his players achieve.  I'm not sure why it took Gunner Kiel three choices to pick Notre Dame, but I am sure that Les Miles is either very badly spoken, or very disrepectful, for insulting a young man for his decision.  I hope his quarterback from Mississippi serves him well, and doesn't feel like "second fiddle" because his coach pointed out that the first choice got away!

I have learned in my life that it isn't the name on the degree, or even the exisrtence of a degree itself, that determines how far anyone goes, rather it is the result of hard work and ability. I often about the work ethic of those who cling to the belief that a degree is a magic ticket.

Yes, I know a lot about Notre Dame.  Players take cupcake majors like anywhere else, and to deny that the standards of admissions are lower for players is simply wrong.

Again, it amazes me how many didn't actually watch the video provided, but Les didn't even name the kid much less insult him - it was really more a welcome to the better QB recruit he did actually land.

As an athlete he will attend separate classes, and in fact a separate college.

Miles has been known in the past to speak with good intentions but somehow come out with a really bad comment.  His goal was to commend Jeremy Liggins for standing up in Oxford, Ms. (Ole Miss) and proudly announcing his signing with LSU.  Instead it clearly came through as an insult to Kiel.  I'm sure it caught the attention of potential recruits and he has been rightfully chastised in the media.  This is the worst comment I've heard from him.

Les Miles is an idiot how can you slam a high school kid that is being told what do and where to go, this kid is being influenced by so many other people he didnt know where to go, but for miles to go and say those kinds of things, it just shows what kind of a person he really is.

Miles hasn't said anything that even needs an explanation-What evryone's doing is surfing for anything negative so they can make a retort-The kid changed his mind, which is his right, it's also the right of a coach to underplay the decision in a light which favors his school, although he probably should have wished the kid the best of luck-except when and if he came up against LSUSmile

It is a tossup who is more lacking in class, Les Miles or Gunnar Kiel. At least Kiel is an 18yo kiod, so i guess you can give him a pass, but this is his thied school to commit to and did not even inform LSU he had changed his mind...

I was not aware that anyone has ever accused Les Miles of having any class!
