When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Dear Gunner, The choice was yours to make and you made the choice that made the most sense for you.  The other side of the coin is that you will never be in a BCS game, much less the championship game during your stay at ND.

Les Miles acted like a little b**** here.  Crying over someone changing their mind when LSU (and most big programs) lies to recruits all the time, stringing them along, telling them how they'll fit in, then dumping them when a different recruit pops up on their horizon.

Miles is a two-faced crapbag who doesn't like being treated the same way he treats others.  Wah freakin' wah.  What a douchetard.

Bottom line - any quarterback worth his salt who watched the BCS Championship would have been nuts to go play in that "offense".  The
coordinators who helped Matt Flynn and JaMarcus Russell get drafted are long gone, and Les obviously got out coached from the moment the matchup was announced.  Maybe Miles should look in the mirror, because this is his fault for embarrassing his university in front of a huge national audience.

What a complete lack of class.  If he'd wanted to show his support for his new guy he could have done that like an adult, but instead he acted like a little punk.

I like what the coach said at least you know he's passionate about making his team better; meaning Young Kiel must be the truth.  Sports-Education mixed is crap.  It's either one or the other, not many atheletes are thinking about education when their heads are being filled with dreams of sugar (bowl), rose (bowl) or orange (bowl) dancing in their heads.  Play now educate later, at least that's the way I see it, check the military for stats or history of ex-college atheletes joining to either finish their college degree or jump start a career.

Hey Jerry Hinnen, seriously?  Where do your radio stations broadcast from?  Convents and seminaries?  The guy said Kiel didn't have the chest to play at LSU.  The LOWEST of radio callers insult like that?

Miles made one single, completely benign, almost vanilla statement.  You make it sounds like Kiel was castrated as a pre-teen.

Get a life.

If I saw all of the stunted growth QB's that LSU has had to offer: Jamarcus Russell, Jarrett Lee, Matt Mauch, and Jordan Jefferson over the past few seasons. I think I would decline LSU too if I were a Quarterback. You don't want to go to LSU and wind up being Matt Flynn who I said was better all along than Jamarcus Russell. Yet, Jamarcus because he could run halfway decent and throw the ball the length of the football field on his knees without accuracy was chose to start over the much more stable Matt Flynn. Then Les Miles whose team is always pretty good because Nick Saban built it as an institute were players want to come and play football. Les Miles however, if he didn't have that advantage would be definitely exposed. I have not come across a worse Time Clock Coach in the high school, college, CFL, Indoor Football, or NFL football than Miles. Then Les Miles let Jordan Jefferson come back and be rewarded to start after being suspended. When Jarrett Lee was doing a great job. Miles praises Liggins for coming to LSU and questions Kiel who he probably doesn't even know or has ever had contact with. LSU is a fine university with top of the world athletes and is held in high regards in terms of academics, but they have a bumbling oaf as a coach.

Les is acting like he is still in the 5th grade. My goodness Les, did someone steal your ball? The AD's at these Universities better get back control and quickly. This is an embarrasment beyond belief. Can someone tell me what the graduation rate is at LSU for football recruits. Also can someone tell Les what the meaning of the word graduation is. Thank You Les for making Ole Miss look good.

Although Les Miles was way out of line by slamming a kid, for making his decision final to attend N.D.,Personally, I dont think it was a good decision to play at N.D., but it was his decision and he had the right to change his mind as many times as he wanted to up until he signed his LOI. I have read on this post many references to the fact the LSU took him from Indiana. That is not accurate.. He had decommitted well in advance of his verbal to LSU.

Les needs to grow up. If Gunner changes his mind, Miles needs to live with it.
