When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Kiel is a drama queen. He will do nothing at Notre Dame. Just like all of their previous QBs have. If he wanted to be a perennial backup in the NFL. He chose the right program.

Hey KittyJon,

I'm a man! I'm 40! Well, actually 42. 6-3, 240 lbs. Married for 20 years to a beautiful red-head. As for your comment on me bangin' away on the keyboard? Guilty as charged. Tends to happen when you have an a$$ for a coach like Miles who cheats like its going out of style, then feigns outrage when the tables are turned on him. He, and you, look like a$$es for trying to defend him.

To D.WhoDatNation. First off the "who dat" thing ended a long time ago. I will agree ND is by far the most over rated team every season but who cares they bring in the viewers. Yet the rest of your post may not be correct, who am I to say what is right and wrong but you have issues. I am fortunate enough to live by the beach and I get the stereotype comments all the time for having blonde hair and a tan (I live by the the damn ocean you expect me to be pale), but you may have set the bar to a new level. I say that because you are making the south (by your name, also they won't claim you) look like idiots, your post brings up the term redneck and white trash. Mr Dat you have proven in print you are a complete fool. There is more to life then football. You are talking crap about a kid. If I could have talked my nephew out of joining the Army when he was 18 he would still be alive. I think every kid should get a second or even third option. Yes Dat, this is only football not life which you seem to not have one.

Pretty hypocritical, considering Kiel had originally committed to IU, before Miles swiped him away.  He didn't seem to think poorly of him for flopping to LSU in the first place, but now he's a bad kid for flopping back away from them?  Pretty sure nobody's going to feel much sympathy for you on that one, Les.

I don't really mind kids changing their mind like that... though I can see where coaches do.  But to say it's OK when it's in your favor, but terrible when it's not is just being petulant.

Maybe the problem is that sports media makes "signing day" such a huge deal that we get stupid stunts perpetuated by networks - like not having kids announce their commitment and then having a meaningless "high school all-star game" where certain kids are lined up behind three hats and then pick one (or draw a surprise one out of a backpack, or whatever). Here's an idea - kill rivals.com and ESPN.com and let the players pick their schools without hyping it up like it's a Presidential race or finding the cure for AIDS.

Oh, and Les Miles is an ass. So a kid picked Notre Dame over your school. Big deal. You probably recruited about 5 quarterbacks anyway - did you think they'd all show up to LSU and fight for one spot?

who dat alright! who dat that is that stupid! even LSu fans can defend his actions here! weak and embarrassing and it will come back to haunt him. You think all the other schools wont be replaying that for a few years to prospective recruits! the thing lamer than his actions was his play calling in the CG.

by the way no one said lee was the answer or he wouldnt throw the ball, they didnt need to or did you miss the game! hope that D can keep everyone under 12 points, and they might but they still have to play Ala!

enjoy the cotton or sugar bowl Les

I'm a sooner fan I could care less about LSU.  Point blank the kid skipped out on the coach and left him hanging.  I have no problem with a coach pointing it out to his fan base.  Some of yall need to grow up and get a backbone.
Sure thing, but it would have meant more If Les hadnt gotten the kid to decommit from his prior verbal to another school. His words are as weak as that offense they put up against Bama in January ...

Les didnt have a problem when he got him to decommit before.
