When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Hopefully the 6-6 LSU Tigers and the 6-6 Notre Dame Irish can battle in the KeepDrinkingtheKool-Aid.com bowl game next year to see which school has the best QB.

Kid committed then decommitted.  If he has the guts to agree to play someplace then change it mind and rather screw them over he should be willing to take whatever comments anyone sends his way.  It's grown up time and you panty waists out there need to grow up already.  Sometimes calling a spade a spade is the correct thing to do.  I'm a sooner fan I could care less about LSU.  Point blank the kid skipped out on the coach and left him hanging.  I have no problem with a coach pointing it out to his fan base.  Some of yall need to grow up and get a backbone.

Les Miles is a punk.  Many of these coaches are.  They are allowed to mess with kid's lives all of the time and it goes unnoticed.  They are allowed to leave and change their minds on kids all of the time...  Seriously dude, maybe if you weren't such a punk and maybe if you had'nt gotten thoroughly outcoached in the championship game, Kiel would be attending LSU.  He must be that good if Miles is still stewing about it. HAHAHAHA...

Tiger Jon:  Wow. Are you really so blind that you can't see that Les should have just let the thing play out.  If he does well at ND, Les looks like a fool.  If he fails than no loss to LSU.

Wow, I used to kinda admire LSU fans. I'm reconsidering that opinion, having read these posts. Dudes, seriously, that yahoo who poisoned the sacred tree looks better today by comparison, I'm sad to say.

Les is a bit off-base

Having not all the opportunities to witness Mr. Miles' 'speeches' here in Europe or read his thoughts on 'educating' young adults, one can only speculate as to how he DID NOT impress a number of those that intended to attend LSU . . more for its athletics than academics.
I believe it was printed that Kiel was one of 5 "intentees" to go elsewhere . . and most of those to rivals in their own conference.  Might this have something to say about the coach and the staff?  If one were to witness Miles' tirades on other occasions, might that be a significant point in playing under his 'leadership'?
College recruiting is getting out of hand . . but when a program with the visibility of LSU within the SEC ultimately chastises a high school student for 'renigging' on his intent, then ask a parent . . "Would you want your son to be under such an influence and guider of is future?"  I say, NOT!

The more one knows about Les Miles, the less one likes him.  The guy appears to be much more of a recruiter than a coach.  His offensive strategy against Bama was embarrassingly inept, to say the least. He put in one of the worst performances in a big game that college football has ever witnessed. If the guy had half a conscience, he'd be walking around in sackcloth and ashes, instead of calling out a teenage jock in public.  The guy is an embarrassment.
