When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

So, it turns out Les Miles is an immature tool.  Huh.  He sounds like a jilted girlfriend, but a girl who had unceremoniously dumped dozens of boyfriends who "thought they had something special".  What a putz.

Maybe Miles doesn't realize the impact of putting out the most embarrassing offensive gameplan in BCS Championship game history has on recruits.

Less Miles would be fine with me.  He is an average coach who landed a job in college-football central.  8 quarters against Bama this year w/o a TD.  So overrated...can't blame Kiel from changing his mind

Wow, lost alot of respect for Les Miles.  This is very immature to say. I'm sure you were thinking this when you were kissing his a$$ to come to LSU right?

Don't blame the kid. The way Miles coached the National Championship game I'm surprised ALL the recruits did not change their minds. Hope Gunner gets the chance to shine, if they play LSU.

I know you know this, but LSU ain't the only SEC school over-signing players. 8 of the 12 do every year. By the way, I think that OK State got jobbed this year. Having said that, you got the better end of the deal when Miles left. You guys got Mike Gundy as a result. And, as we all know, he's a man! He's 40! :) Miles? Not so much.

Sucks when you're on the receiving end of being over-signed, doesn't it, Miles? What a loser! Jump on an 18 year old kid who only did what 8 of the SEC schools have been doing to kids for decades. He gave a commitment, then found someone he liked better, and told LSU he doesn't have a place for them. Sounds like karma to me. All those years of over-signing recruits just to tell them, "I'm sorry, there just isn't a place for you this year. Tell you what, we know you can't transfer without sitting out a year (because we suckered you into signing by promising something we didn't deliver on), so why don't you just sit this season, come on back in the spring, and we'll let you try again next season. Great deal, eh?" HA! Then Miles has the gall to call an 18 year old kid out at some stupid a$$ signing day celebration. Real courage, I tell you. He's the anti-Mike Gunday. But then again, he is a Michigan man, so nothing he does surlrises me. Personally, I think the stress of competing in the over-signing cheaters conference is getting to him, and he's cracking up. It's only gonna get worse.
