When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Miles may be an idiot and classless but I do not think he was trying to hurt this kid.  The event he was at was not supposed to be recored and shown to everyone.  I still think he is a classless dirtbag but do not think he intended this to get out so the kid would hear.

No, you don't NEED to.  That's the point. Miles didn't NEED to.  But he CHOSE to.  We all make stupid statements in the heat of the moment.  Most of us don't write stupid into our public speaking engagements.
And I never said he wasn't stupid. Just that his words weren't meant hurt GK, if they were then he would have made it a point to schedule a press conference with ESPN and announce it then. I'm saying this wasn't meant ot get out, it did and he'll pay for it in the way of public perception.

I've coached younger kids for years now and I can't count the time I've told a confidant something like, "My goodness, this kid is awful!" or been with some buddies and made a crude comment about someone else's goodlooking or ugly wife.

My point is that Miles makes enough foolish statements to the outside press to make him look like an idiot, I'm not going to use something that was supposed to be in confidence to judge his character. That's it. Nothing more and nothing "Les"

I will not criticize Les Miles for bashing this young man's very personal decision.   I will congratulate him on being so entertaining while being wrong. Miles is great entertainment.  I hope the Bayou Bengals keep him around for a while.

What the young man DID do was choose a school where if all else fails, he receives an excellent education.

Kommoncense, did you write a speech about it?  I doubt it.  People that dumb get held accountable.

Do I need to Hawkman? I think I've made my point incredibly clear with the short posts I've made. It's obvious that you understand what I'm saying because you don't like it.

Again, it wasn't smart and he'll get blasted. You guys have it.

Good post, skeeter.  I can't say I'm a huge Kelly fan, but it demonstrates it's just not that hard to act with class as long as you have the mental capacity to do it.  Miles apparently lacks that.  He's the coaching equivalent of the guy who calls his ex a slut because she dumped him.  His comments were pathetic from a grown man with the power to influence young men.

It doesn't matter that it wasn't meant for the general public or the press, Coach Miles said it and he came out looking like a lesser person.  Total lack of integrity and certainly not someone I would want my son or daughter to emulate.  Now, let's move forward to spring training and gets these young men ready to play Division I Football!!!

Skeeter - So you've never said something to some friends that you wouldn't be proud of if the media got a hold of it? You've never said anything to a buddy that if it were publicized, your integrity wouldn't be called into question?

Yes, he said it and he looks BAD because of it. I'm just not going to throw stones because I'd be a hypocrite if I did.

lsu boyder, no matter what one thinks of Kiel's decision - one dozens, if not hundreds of kids made yesterday, it doesn't excuse a "man" in Miles' position and experience acting like a pissed off 13 year old girl.

The entire "indecisive" argument is just moronic.  I guess there has never been a quarterback who got divorced, right?  Or, maybe, nobody talks about it because even a chimp could tell that the two things are completely unrelated.  Miles was hot after Kiel after he'd changed his mind once.  Even a clown like Miles knows that changing your mind when you have your future riding on it, have time to do it, and only once chance to get it right, is completely different than forcing a ball to a covered receiver.  It's ridiculous to draw a connection.  I guess every time a student-athlete drops a class a week into the semester because he realizes there's another class that would be better for him he should be scrutiinized for his indecisiveness.  it's just a stupid argument.

BTW, it wasn't an "irresponsible decision".  It was a VERY responsible decision.  It takes more NUTS to do what you feel is the right thing instead of just succumbing to pressure from fans who have never been in the same position.  That would be gutless, but it's what LSU fans wanted him to do.

Miles IS classless for making comments about Kiel.  You don't see this much because most coaches don't act like spoiled children.  Your entire argument revolves around "Miles didn't like what Kiel did, so it's ok for him to act like a complete tool."

Like I said, this panders to the lowest common denominator in LSU fans.  Apparently its the only kind of statement they understand.  It's simple, even if its false and inappropriate.  Might as well be throwing chum to hungry sharks.

You seem to ignore the fact that Kiel had the chance to watch his coach get completely outcoached in the BCS championship, and look like a pee-wee football offensive mastermind at the same time.  THAT happened between his verbal commitment and his LOI.  Miles can only look in the mirror when he loses an offensive recruit after the embarrassing effort he put out in the BCS.
