When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Now we can add classless as another reason for keeping Les Miles as far away from the Michigan campus as possible.

Brian Kelly highlighted the difference between a coach with class and a classless coach.  While Miles publically belittled Gunner Kiel at the Bayou Bash, Coach Kelly's comment at the devastating loss of Greenberry was "For me it's hard to be disappointed about something you've never had or you've never coached, you know, I'm more excited about the guys that signed because they are the right kinda guys. "  That is the way you highlight the guys that do sign; that is the way you get past the loss of a recruit!  How many times has it been said that if you don't want something to be repeated in the public, don't Facebook, MySpace, Tweet, announce, state or otherwise let it come out of your mouth or be associated with you.  It doesn't matter that it wasn't meant for the general public or the press, Coach Miles said it and he came out looking like a lesser person.  Total lack of integrity and certainly not someone I would want my son or daughter to emulate.  Now, let's move forward to spring training and gets these young men ready to play Division I Football!!!

Matt Flynn had a different offensive coordinator.  Come on, at least pretend you know the game.

The problem with this completely broken logic is it ignores the fact that if Les Miles had any class whatsoever he could have built Liggins up without ever mentioning the "kid from Indiana".  He's a borderline idiot who appeals to the lowest common denominator in LSU fans, and there are enough ignorant responses by them on this board to prove that his style works.  .

Really. Gunner Kiel didn't even call. There was a meeting  for the early enrollees that Kiel was supposed to be attending. He didn't even call the coaches to let them know that he was flipping. Not only did we lose out on Kiel, but it also costs us the commitment of another player. The coaches had to find out via a media statement released by Notre Dame. Are you saying that's not classless.

Of course, the second problem is, it's completely false.  This isn't about "chest" and anyone but the most blindly ignorant fan can see that there's no basis for that statement.  This is about a kid wanting to play close to home and MAYBE wanting a better education and to play for an offense that doesn't put make any quarterback look like garbage.

If he wanted to play closer to home and go to Notre Dame for a better education then why even commit to LSU and renig after you are supposed to be on campus. His mind changed multiple times at the end of the process. What kind of decision making skill does he portray by doing this. How does this make you look like you are worthy of making leadership decisions. How many great leaders, or QB's for that matter, do you know that are as indecisive as this. CLM was simply stating, that Jeremy Liggins had the "chest" to committ to a school, without making any indecisive decisions. He did this in front of his home crowd as opposed to hiding behind the media to say "I changed my mind.....again" All Les was saying is, we want players that want to be here and have the NUTS to stand behind there reasons when making a life changing decision. Gunner is going to be at the helm of a lot of scrutiny over the next couple of years and possibly more. Now everyone wants to call CLM classless for making comments about Mr. Prima Donna Kiel. The "kid" as you call him needs to learn how to take responsibility for his actions and learn how to take critism. I can promise you it won't be the last time that he'll be criticized for making an irresponsible decision. It's time to play with the big boys now.

Classless by both parties. Gunner for not informing them he was making a change to be closer to home, and for Miles for not respecting that. Laundry should never be done in public.

Obviously the kid saw the fact that Miles's offensive scheme was horrendous and decided he would be better off with N.D. Miles should have just kept quiet and written him off. Kiel should play in a wide open offense, and the SEC prolly isn't a good fit for him anyways.

This attack on a kid, combined with the Bama loss, makes Miles him look awful.

Again, I wouldn't have said the things Miles said in that big of a group but I have said things that I wouldn't have wanted others to hear when I thought I was in the company of people who were like minded. It doesn't make it right, it just makes him human.

If he apologized, would it mean anything other than he was sorry that the comments were caught on tape? I doubt it.
