When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Haha DWhoDatNation...and we all remember how that fat ass quarterback Demarcus beat up on Notre Dame and was the high draft pick for the NFL? How did that work out? What a fat loser he was...no surprise. Brady is playing behind Tim Tebow. Find me a qb from LSU that would play in front of him. Oh wait you dont have any in the NFL.

Really oosterbaan...calling out a young man for changing his mind? What were you like at his age? And by the way how many recruits changed their mind and opted for the old maize and blue? Your character assassination on a young man speaks volumes about you. Speaking of asses...

debop...get off your moral high horse. One of Notre Dame's comittments bowed out at the last minute and decided to go to Houston. BK said he couldnt be sad about someone he never had. Of course he was disappointed but he isnt bad mouthing the kid like Les Miles has. Grow up they are verbal committments and a number of recruits changed their minds. Urban Meyer got 2 from ND and USC got 2 as well. You guys are making bigger fools of yourselves than your players did in the Sugar Bowl. Move on.

The problem with this completely broken logic is it ignores the fact that if Les Miles had any class whatsoever he could have built Liggins up without ever mentioning the "kid from Indiana".  He's a borderline idiot who appeals to the lowest common denominator in LSU fans, and there are enough ignorant responses by them on this board to prove that his style works.  Of course, the second problem is, it's completely false.  This isn't about "chest" and anyone but the most blindly ignorant fan can see that there's no basis for that statement.  This is about a kid wanting to play close to home and MAYBE wanting a better education and to play for an offense that doesn't put make any quarterback look like garbage.

this speach was more about pumping up Jeremy Liggins making his commit speach in the center of Ole Miss and not really even about Kiel.   CROCK!

Good grief Cajun...now his defection is compared to being in the armed forces. Would you guys get a grip? You are as classless as your coach. The only other coach whining about losing a recruit was the Wisconsin coach and his issues are with Urban Meyer and the so called gentleman's agreement. But hey if beating this young man up makes you feel better about losing him go for it. Pitiful.

This was probably a bad move on Mile's part but only because some hack caught it on video. This was pretty much a LSU pep rally and not the State of the Union address. Even in the short clip, if you listen, he was pumping up the kid who bailed on Ole Miss more than he was trashing Keil.

These comments were not intended for the masses to degrade a young man but were made inside a group where Miles probably thought he had some protection from being exposed to the general media (bad move in this day and age)

With that being said, character can be defined by the decisions you make when no one is looking. In this case Mile's character is being defined by the statements he made when he thought the outside world wasn't listening. JMO

oscwahoo..that's laughable coming from an Ohio State fan. Havent noticed your team in the game lately or wait maybe you count that beatdown by Florida as being in the game? Haha...dont say squat about LSU getting hammered ever...that was a major beatdown by Florida. Now you have Urban so.....as soon as you are eligible.

Haha Redtomsawyer...that would be 1988 and that was their 11th NC. LSU has how many exactly? 4? It has been 25 years since the Irish won one and during that time LSU had plenty of chances? to catch up? Have that? No. So I guess in your mind, whatever that is, it is better to make it to the NC game and get hammered; not just beaten, dominated. So congrats for making it there and being the bridesmaid. Post again when LSU gets close to the no of championships ND has. Alabama has and is ahead now. LSU still lagging behind. So all those wins during the season mean squat.

Amen GoldenMarine. I thought the exact same thing. As a ND fan I was really disappointed in several recruits who went elsewhere but it is their choice. Les Miles is supposed to be a role model for his players and he acts like a spoiled child who didnt get his way. Let's get real here every school has gone through this. A highly touted recruit decides to go elsewhere at the eleventh hour. Do you remember when the qb pulled the hat plug on ND at the last minute and went to Wake Forest. Turned out it was a bad decision for him in the long run but a stunner for ND just the same. These are young men trying to make a commitment for 4 years and most of them probably hoping for a shot in the NFL. How about the Mom who went off in front of God and everybody because her son chose to go to Alabama when she wanted him to go to LSU? How heady of the kid and how classless of the mother. LSU fans are still in mourning over the beatdown by Alabama in the NC game; now would have been an ideal time to put that devastating loss behind them and move on to next season. Gush about the recruits you got instead of the one or ones that got away and try to show the class you expect your players to have.
