When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

Les Miles gets dominated on National TV in the title game and has the right to say Kiel isn't man enough to lead a team.  This guy has lost it.  He got exposed by Saban and wants to skirt the blame to an 18 y/o high school senior for not being man enough to come to the bayou.  You might want to study an offensive playbook until the 2012 season starts.

Les is right. Gunner Kiel didn't have the "chest" to call LSU to tell them on the day that he was supposed to show up, that he isn't coming. He decommitted on his own from Indiana and then again with LSU on the day he was supposed to be there. If you watch the whole video and not just this clip, then you would know that this speach was more about pumping up Jeremy Liggins making his commit speach in the center of Ole Miss and not really even about Kiel. The media only shows this very small clip from a longer speach to make it look like it was about Kiel. Real Classy Media.

Another thing, even if Les was bashing Kiel, who cares? Gunner is 18 yrs old and old enough to vote. Plus, he will be the face of a Div 1 college football program. He's a man, and not a kid anymore. If he doesn't learn how to take criticism for his decisions now, what kind of man do you think that he'll grow up to be.

Les made these comments at a local recruiting party. This wasn't meant for the media. A coaches job is to get the fans fired up about the upcoming year. Mission accomplished. NO HARM DONE.

What is wrong with people these days? Kids are allowed to do anything without comment or thought, "because they are kids". As a former HS teacher I have to say, our eductaion system is messed up, our society is messed up and our world is messed up because of "this a kid". Beleive it or not, kids can learn honesty, integrety, and to be people who keep their word, and if they odn't learn it when they're kids, they probably won't learn it. If it wasn't for the media, I wouldn't even know who Kiel was. Assuming Kiel didn't realize he was being watched by the whole country and then went back on his word in a way sure to embarras LSU and mess up their recruiting because they took him at his word. Sorry, I'm not buying it. The media pays too much attention to these things. And if you completely immoral writeres have to exploit the behaviour of 17 year old kids, and younger to make a living, you need to find something real to do. The reporting on the recruiting process is the sports equivalent of kiddie porn, and Sportsline and sites like it are peddling it all over the country. What's wrong with this process is not Les Miles, what's wrong with this is the reporting of recruiting, that makes this whole thing ridiculous. A 17 year old kid can't sign a legal contract. But he can commit 4 years of his life to a school in near servitude conditions. He's not treated like he's "just a kid" then is he? He signs on the line and there are consequences if he doesn't stay with the program. It's all corrupt. Media, players , coaches and universities.

wow, LSU graduates its footballers at an average rate of 76%....and right behind Vandy [97%]. les is actually clucking like a proud peacock...and takes a swipe at a teenager who was probably dragging a candy bag around in a Halloween costumn 5 years ago....nice!...well you gotta play to the crowd you're pulling your recruits from....the 76 percenters...

Kiel's intelligent parents saw what their kid was walking into and pulled the plug ...Kiel will now get his chance to play before a NATIONAL audience EVERY Saturday...and get an actual education to carry him once he hangs up his cleats.

Funny how one coach can make a storied institution look so bad when they've accomplished so much.

Three cheers for "The Kid"

so wait, by your logic, you can be a complete dick and a classless douche, so long as you teach these kids that winning isn't everything, it's the only thing?  And didn't LSU lose the National Championship in historic fashion?  Meaning, weren't they bent over and butt slammed by Alabama?  So why does Les Miles get to make fun of anyone for not wanting to come to his 2nd place, apparently classless football program?

I think I'd prefer eating chips on a recliner than being a$$ banged by Alabama on national tv.

Les shows no class in this situation.  Other kids have changed their minds 4 or more times and they are not being attacked by coaches.   But I am sure if the kid switched from ND to LSU Les would say how smart the kid was.  Truely classless to attack an 18 yo kid.

But those ND coaches was showing Kiel a whole lot during the NC game.  Like how to sit in an overstuffed recliner or the proper position to lay on a couch while WATCHING the game.  And how to hold your dip and chips so they don't fall in the floor or the chips break off in the dip.  You know... real important things about playing football.  Those are some great coaches up there in ND land.

You know, Notre Dame lost a bigger recruit (for their needs) to Houston.  I didn't hear Coach Kelly slamming Greenberry for making such a strange switch on signing day.  All he said was he could not be sad over something he never had.  As a Notre Dame fan I am glad to here that Miles is so hurt that instead of praising his players he is bashing ours.  That lets me know this kid is special, or Les wouldn't be crying so hard.  What also gets lost on Miles is that football isn't everything to this young man, apparently Mom wanted him to go to a more prestigious academic institution.  Not saying that LSU isn't a great school, but its not Stanford or Notre Dame and thats for damn sure.
