When asked about recruits that head to other programs, many college football coaches will say they only want to talk about the players that did sign. But Les Miles has never been one not to speak on any topic he's been asked about, and so at Wednesday night's "Bayou Bash" recruiting celebration, Miles said exactly what he thought of five-star LSU-commitment-turned-Notre Dame signee Gunner Kiel

"We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a young man from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State," Miles said in reference to Kiel, "[but] he did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know."

Miles's emphatic delivery of his statement -- complete with "chest" hand gestures -- helped drive home his negative opinion on Kiel. Via the YouTube channel of the LSU student paper, the Daily Reveille, here's the video:

Miles goes on to praise new LSU quarterback signee Jeremy Liggins, who committed to the Tigers over his hometown Ole Miss Rebels in downtown Oxford.

It goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: Miles going out of his way to slam a 17-or-18-year-old recruit in the sort of terms you'd hear from the lowest of sports talk-radio callers falls far, far below the standard of class we'd expect from one of the nation's most visible coaches. It's not just that Miles' willingness to sling mud at a teenager makes him seem childish and petty; it's that the swipe seems to be motivated by a need to pander to the worst instincts of the worst part* of his Tiger fanbase.

There's little doubt Miles hasn't gotten to where he is by being a saint, and we don't blame him for being frustrated by Kiel's decision. But by sounding more like a common dweller on an LSU message board than the man who heads up the entire LSU football program, Miles has let that frustration boil over into a decision he should apologize for at the first opportunity.

VIDEO: Les Miles slams Gunner Kiel

Maybe Gunner saw the azz ass kicking that Les' team tokk took in the National Championship game

First of all, FTFY.

Secondly, maybe Gunner saw the ass kicking that Notre Dame took all season. Oh yeah, they didn't even make the NCG. /not an LSU fan.

Thirdly, LSU has a different need for QBs than ND does. LSU will want a QB that is happy to run the option and be mobile, and often play second fiddle to the run game. ND doesn't play the same kind of game as LSU does, or at least not normally. SEC defesnive players make the NFL, not offensive players, and especially not QBs. Recent exceptions include Tebow and Newton, with the Mannings too, however the latter two are NFL-style drop back passers. Newton has amazing athleticism, and Tebow is so polarising that I won't offer an explanation about him. Probably the fact that he was a Heisman winner and a twice NCG winner helped his draft stock.

Notre Dame will more than likely prepare him well for the NFL should be cut the mustard at ND. LSU will prepare him for championships in future seasons. It depends on what you want, often you can't have the best of both worlds, so one must ask, do I risk starting time and an NFL career to play in a NC caliber team? Or do I risk not winning championships to become a nationwide star and increase my draft stock?

Signing for college has more variables than just one game in January. Lets remember that he'll be at college for 36-52 games, (56 for teams that get to the NCG+CCG). One game is about 2-3% of a career, so it doesn't register. What does register is Nationwide exposure, TV time, education, coaching staffs and pro potential. Please have a little more sense, or trolling ability before you try to say such naive things. :)

Aw, Les, don't fret about it.  This guy can't seem to make up his mind about anything.  It seems obvious that he was a bit afraid of competing in a real conference week in/out.  Maybe you'll get your shot at him in a future bowl game.  For now, move on.

If anyone needed any more proof Miles is a low-life individual and a spoiled, selfish whiney brat whose maturity never graduated grade school, here it is.  He earns millions every year and he can't stay above ripping into a kid who wanted to play a sport for peanuts for a different university than the one paying him his millions.  What an utter ass.

If the so called Wimp deserves it? Maybe you and Les can refresh everyones memory with whatever Les and the LSU bunch had to say about the young mans decision to back out of his commitment to indiana? I'm sure it was just as daming?

This is unbelievable.  Michigan State lost a player to OSU this year when Urban Meyer took over for the Buckeyes.  I think Dantonio would have been better served to wish the kid well.  Same thing with Miles.  If Kiel felt better at ND..wish him well.  Easier said than done but if these kids aren't commited to your program to start with, why whine over them leaving?  Let them go where they feel they're a better fit.

Seems like nobody gave this "he's just a kid" excuse to Jordan Jefferson and Honey Badger when they got in trouble.    Les didn't name Gunner by name.

Notre Dame is obviously a lesser program and with that brings lesser competition and expectations.  If that's what Gunner wants, then that's what he gets.

He may have told Les that his heart wasn't in it.  Ever think about that?
