Barry Alvarez: Recruiting is 'open season'

It doesn't sound like Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is as concerned about Urban Meyer's recruiting tactics the way his own head coach and others in the Big Ten seem to be.

Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema, along with Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, made it clear that they were not fans of the way Urban Meyer had conducted himself during his first recruiting season with Ohio State. Specifically the way Meyer recruited players that had previously given commitments to other Big Ten schools, including Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Bielema also said on Thursday Barry Alvarez would be talking to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer when the two met. While that conversation may still happen, if you listen to what Alvarez told ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday, it doesn't sound like he's going to be asking Delany to make Meyer change his habits.

"Urban was very aggressive but there is no pact within the conference not to continue to recruit," Alvarez told Schad in regards to the supposed "gentleman's agreement" amongst Big Ten coaches. "Open season."

Which makes it sound like if Bielema doesn't want Meyer coming around his recruits, he's just going to have to work even harder to make sure those recruits come to play at Wisconsin, not Ohio State.

Barry Alvarez: Recruiting is 'open season'

Hey AAmonte, I have heard from others (that attend his school) that Kalis quietly spoke with someone from OSU and wanted to COME back to OSU and was told "thanks, but no thanks" Enjoy mediocrity!

I heard he did talk to some ohio people as well. He and Andre Pipkins both did, it was at the UUAAG and after they spoke to them the ohio guys picked themselves off the ground and dusted off the dirt from there jerseys and face...40-34

Since when does accurately describing your actions = insult?  Nowhere in the above do I resort to insulting you,... I simply stated that you've been whining about this since Pittman jumped ship... which you have.  If memory serves me, you even brought up the idea of filing lawsuits against kids who decommit and "break a verbal contract".  If that isn't whining, I don't know what it.

First, I am not whining and you continuing to say I am is insulting.

Second, I did not say that lawsuits should be filed.  To the contrary, I clearly explained why they never are.

You did not bother to read anything beyond what you wanted to see.

Your closed-mindedness is completely expected. You do not see the difference between contacting someone who is already considering a change versus someone who has said nothing about how happy he is with his choice? You do not see the difference between a kid backing out of a commitment because the coaches he thought would be there left and a kid backing out of a commitment because another school hired a new coach?

Yea, you don't see it.  You don't want to see it. All you can see is winning at any cost.

And finally, condolences to Se'Von Pittman, who will find himself sitting on the bench for 4 years.

You really need to quit talking out of both sides of your mouth on this issue.
That's how you perceive it. I can't help it you are so totally wrong.

Kalis chose Michigan...yes, but after he was committed to OSU.  Michigan also agressively pursued Dunn another OSU recruit committed to the program.  For all of you Michigan fans claiming to be above the fray...consider this; Hoke openly agrees with Meyer and his actions support his words.

Hum...I guess you'd call Brady Hoke "greasy" for flipping Kalis an OSU recruit and "greasy" for the agressive pursuit of Brionte Dunn.  Your comment is as Hokey as your coach...but, before I forget...HOKE AGREES WITH MEYER!!!!  Geez!

What I find absolutely immature is people like you who think that using insults is a great tactic for winning a debate

MSU contacted Dodson a month after Darth Meyer unsettled the kid. Wisconsin had 6 coaches leave including the coach that recruited Dodson. Big difference when the player is already publically on the fence than cold calling a kid who spent the last half year writing about how excited he is for playing for a school or a coach. Big difference.

Big difference?  LOL.  Quit kidding yourself!  Dodson was a Wisconsin "commit" up until National Signing Day.  MSU was trying to get in on that action (though you've previously stated that Dantonio was "above" such practices).  Face it... it took your coach approximately 3 weeks to disprove your statements about him.

And... you are stating that a coaching change should be brought into the equation to decide whether or not nosing in on committed kids is allowable?  FYI - Ohio State had a coaching change as well, so I guess they get a freebie (even from you) this season.

You really need to quit talking out of both sides of your mouth on this issue.  As I've stated before, any recruiter who doesn't follow up with recruits because the are commits elsewhere isn't worth his paycheck.  If a kid asks the recruiter to stop bothering him, so be it.  If he shows interest... that recruiter better continue to recruit his butt off.

Finally, welcome home Se'Von Pittman!  Congrats on your opportunity to be a Buckeye.

MSUSpartan76 has been whining about this incessantly since Pittman had the good sense to pick Ohio State.  He regularly makes statements that "Mark Dantonio is above those practices" when that is far from the case.  Kyle Dodson was a Wisconsin commit that was actively being courted by both Meyer and Dantonio.  I'm assuming that IF Dodson would have picked MSU over the Buckeyes... he'd have had no issues with the recruiting process.  As MSU only came out a loser in the deal... it's back to whining incessantly.  Wink

Your whole position is predicated on whatever it takes to win is ok. Wrong.

And if it is whining to try to discuss issues like this, then that is fine with me.

What I find absolutely immature is people like you who think that using insults is a great tactic for winning a debate.

Yeah right, Ohio State found the previous hire's behavior to be so acceptable, they forced him out.  Moron
Oh. Yea. Forgot. They fired him, right? Oh. Yea. Forgot.  They changed their minds and allowed him to resign.
