Barry Alvarez: Recruiting is 'open season'

It doesn't sound like Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is as concerned about Urban Meyer's recruiting tactics the way his own head coach and others in the Big Ten seem to be.

Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema, along with Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, made it clear that they were not fans of the way Urban Meyer had conducted himself during his first recruiting season with Ohio State. Specifically the way Meyer recruited players that had previously given commitments to other Big Ten schools, including Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Bielema also said on Thursday Barry Alvarez would be talking to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer when the two met. While that conversation may still happen, if you listen to what Alvarez told ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday, it doesn't sound like he's going to be asking Delany to make Meyer change his habits.

"Urban was very aggressive but there is no pact within the conference not to continue to recruit," Alvarez told Schad in regards to the supposed "gentleman's agreement" amongst Big Ten coaches. "Open season."

Which makes it sound like if Bielema doesn't want Meyer coming around his recruits, he's just going to have to work even harder to make sure those recruits come to play at Wisconsin, not Ohio State.

a player is not yours until you sign him. he is not yours till he shows up at school. if he is a highly rated qb, no not yours till you start him.
I assume your talking about Les MIles here right? Whining because the kid he stole from Indiana got stolen by ND?

Does it make a difference? Does sound wimpy.  Obviously, the recruit viewed OSU differently before the Meyer hire.  I hate Meyer too, but he is great coach and very good hire by OSU and he is doing what he is paid to do.  But again I don't see getting any players from the likes of Wisconsin as a big deal.  Childs play...

I cant wait to see cryers face when he loses to MSU and UofM with that "shot put" of a qb Miller. It will be glorious.

Easy answer to this issue.  Each Big10 coach should assign a coach to recruit Ohio State's committs for just ONE season, and I'll bet Urban Meyers will cry uncle in a hurry.  Urban Meyer had a lot of nerve showing up at Joe Paterno's memorial service after taking 4 of PSU's recruits--of course maybe he was there to try and take more.  Urban will find out that the Big10 will not be friendly toward him.

Bielema does not have a problem running up the score on his opponents but cries when someone out works him? Yes, Meyer is dancing on that fine line of being professional & unethical while still being in compliance. To be honest, until they are signed, you better keep working to hang on to your guy because verbal doesn't hold any weight. Bielema wants it both ways, run up the score & not let anyone take his guys that he didn't bother to 'protect'. Brady Hoke didn't have any problem with it & Bielema shouldn't either. I'm sure he's done the same dang thing. You gotta keep working until you receive his John Hancock.

If it wasn't clear with the previous hire, Ohio is willing to bend or break the rules if it includes a win.

Yeah right, Ohio State found the previous hire's behavior to be so acceptable, they forced him out.  Moron.

Of course Alvarez said that.  He played for the Huskers.  We don't cry foul or make excuses.
