Thursday, Mack Brown confirmed previous reports that rising junior defensive tackle Calvin Howell was leaving the Longhorns and transferring to a yet-to-be-determined location. Brown cited "personal reasons" as the cause of Powell's decision, but it's possible that decision was connected -- in part -- to a Jan. 29 arrest on marijuana possession charges.

The current police blotter for the San Marcos Record shows that a Calvin Trent Howell, 20, was arrested and charged with "possession of marijuana less than 2 oz." at 4:44 a.m. Sunday in San Marcos, Texas, a city located in-between Austin and Howell's hometown of San Antonio.

The charge is a Class B misdemeanor. The Austin-American Statesman reported Friday that, per the arrest report, Howell had been pulled over while speeding. Officers then smelled marijuana in the car and found a small amount on Howell's person.

Though the Longhorns have their usual array of high-caliber talent still remaining at defensive tackle, including new 335-pound juco signee Brandon Moore, the loss of Howell could sting all the same come the 2012 season. Howell started seven games in 2011 for Texas, including the season opener, finishing with 16 tackles, one sack, and one tackle-for-loss. With senior Kheeston Randall having graduated, the 'Horns will now be replacing both nominal starting tackles in the middle of their 4-3 defensive front.

Howell is just the latest of a number of postseason transfers for the 'Horns, a list that includes one-time blue-chip receiver Darius White and former starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

What the heck?  He's not a running back!  Only those guys get to smoke dope.  Cedric Benson, Romance Taylor, Selvin Young - all dopers and all great UT players.  But linemen?  No way!

If what you say is true, than they have had a lot of 'one strikes'.

This is the standard road that most great UT recruiting classes end up going. Recently Mack Brown has been unable to keep his young guys focused. If the Longhorns are to return to the top....this focus must once again become a priority. ROLL TIDE!!

Listen, I live in Texas and most attitudes of Texans, is everything is better in Texas.  I agree with some of it. But listen we're still not better than everyone else.   You've got a great football program at Texas.  If I had been born and raised here, I would be a Longhorn.  But listen, be honest Mack is a great guy and a great recuriter but a very average coach.  All I ask is that you be honest.

It's amusing how Texas fnas are pompous if we take pride in Mack's tough stance on rules violations.  His position on these actions ARE better than a great many coaches at big programs take and I would be disapointed if it were not so.  VERY few coaches have won more games than MB since he arrived at UT.  I guess being proud of that makes me pompous as well.

Mack runs a tight ship.  This can hurt the Longhorns in the short term but is a long term good decision.  Calvin Howell was extremely promising, so it is a shame.  I hope he comes around, makes better decisions and plays well for someone else.

Mack is not always one strike and you are out.  D.J. Monroe is still with the team :)  And in Colt McCoy's freshman year facing Ohio State, Mack Brown was willing to lose that game by benching 3 of our best secondary and letting Gonzalez run wild while our only remaining starter concentrated on Ginn.  They were eventually forgiven and Texas finished strong for a rebuilding year.

Overall, I like Mack's tough approach and discipline, putting correct behaviour over winning games at all costs.  Oh, and the parents of High School superstars do as well.  It is part of the recruiting magic.

Brilliant.

Choosing Mary Jane over a starting DT position with the Longhorns.  Howell will not be missed.  I'm glad Mack chose to give this screw-up his walking papers immediately.
