Gee says NCAA had no precedent for bowl ban

In an interview with the Ohio State student newspaper, The Lantern, school president Gordon Gee took exception to the bowl ban Ohio State received from the NCAA following "Tattoogate." Gee said that the NCAA was essentially out to get Ohio State because it's Ohio State, and that there had been no precedent for such a decision.

"First of all, the NCAA — if we would have given up five bowl games, they would have imposed the sixth on us because they were going to impose a bowl ban," Gee told the paper. "This was Ohio State. This was (the NCAA's) moment in time, and they were going to impose a bowl ban no matter what we did.

"I'm a lawyer. I take a look at precedent. There's no precedent for a bowl ban for us."

I feel like this is where I should point out that never in the history of college football has a university president been fired by a football coach, yet Gee was still worried that it would happen to him, right?

Now, Gee may be right that there is no precedent for the NCAA's decision in this case, but that doesn't mean what the NCAA did is wrong either. Maybe the NCAA did want to send a message to the rest of college football saying "if we'll do this to Ohio State, we'll do this to you too."

Or maybe the NCAA just saw a case in which Ohio State played a bowl game using players that should not have been eligible after Jim Tressel failed to report anything about what he knew for so long, and decided it's only fair to take a bowl game away from Ohio State in return.

The fact is whether you agree with the decision or not -- and I'm guessing Ohio State fans reading this don't, and everyone else does -- there's nothing that can be done about it now. You just accept the punishment and move on.

Gee says NCAA had no precedent for bowl ban

"I'm Gordon Gee... And dammit, I said something... so you better well have listened!  I mean, the sound of my voice, it's like music... Even if I don't know what the hell it means, I can still bob my head to it, and do a little jig..."

This guy's words get more tiring to listen to everytime he opens his mouth and gets quoted... Is it any wonder he's afraid somebody around him is going to fire him at any moment?  Maybe even HE can't believe he's still there.

I mean, I actually LIKE Ohio State, and have nothing against them-- but Gee, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!  Has the entire Big Ten 'establishment' (NOT the players, just the higher ups) gone senile overnight?

Gee says NCAA had no precedent for bowl ban

Even though I think Gee was more guilty than Tressel was, he is right.  There is no precedent for the ban and the NCAA just wanted to make an example of OSU for their trivial offenses.  The bowl ban should have been this year when they suspended many of their players for most of the year--not making the ban this year was just another way to effectively ban them for 3 years like USC while saying that they didn't.  It was a sham that they got any ban really for what was done--they already paid back all money and vacated the season in question in which their personal items were sold for tatoos.  The free charity gifts (that all donors received) and the extra pennies on summer jobs were just signs of a desparate NCAA investigation team looking for anything to hang OSU with--pathetic really.  I mean all that work and the best they could come up with were a few extra pennies earned on summer jobs and free goody bags--seriously?  Yet no one could prove that Cecil Newton's remodeled church was paid for by Auburn?  Yeah, right........

I think the bow tie is too tight - it's obvious that some important parts of this guy's brain died long ago!  What makes me wonder is that the regents of the university can't recognize it.  Yikes!

The bowl ban is the biggest win Michigan has gotten over OSU in a long time. Michigan barely beat OSU in the schools worst year ever last year. OSU is just going to get better and leave the rest of the big ten in the dust, which is why all the Big Ten coaches are crying about OSU out recuirting them.

Too bad Gee, The bowl ban is because you and your criminal U are liers and cheaters and crooks and you are the one who supported it. You should have been fired along with that cheating, liing coach. The I look at it is you got off easy. The whole football program should have been banned for 5-10 years and your other sports programs should have been put on investigative probation. Suck it up and be glad you were not banned. Its totally possible that you had some kind ofcriminal aggreement with the bowl system where you would always be a participant in the post season.
