Georgia Tech trying to finish 2012 schedule

When the ACC announced that unusual circumstances had delayed the release of the 2012 schedule, many believed it was a direct result of West Virginia canceling their Sept. 8 trip to Tallahassee to play Florida State. But with the Seminoles have now filled that slot with Savannah State, and indicated the full ACC regular season schedule should be released "shortly."

But the ACC still needs to wait for one more team before releasing that schedule.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Georgia Tech's agreement to open the season against Virginia Tech on Labor Day has forced a schedule shuffle that has not yet been solved.

“Hopefully, we’re getting to a conclusion, but it’s been pretty frustrating,” associate athletic director Wayne Hogan said Wednesday.

“We’re close, I hope we can announce something pretty soon.”

Georgia Tech was scheduled to play Middle Tennessee on Sept. 8, but with a short week following the trip to Blacksburg on Monday night (Sept. 3) the school would prefer to schedule an FCS opponent for that weekend.

The game against Middle Tennessee will be played later in the season. The Yellow Jackets' original opponent for opening weekend, Southern Louisiana, has been removed from the schedule.

The Yellow Jackets and the Hokies have combined to win every Coastal Division title since the league expanded to two divisions in 2005. In each season the winner of the matchup, usually played later in the year, has gone on to the ACC Championship Game. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, just like the Maryland-Miami opener in 2011.

Georgia Tech trying to finish 2012 schedule

let me get this straight...WVU is happy to the tune of paying 20 Million to go to the Texas league where Colorado, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Missouri sure didn't want to be and several other former Big8 schools would leave if they could find another home....I know now that WVU is gettin takin on a will probably take WVu a couple years to figure that out and it might take their fan base about 20 years to understand it if they ever do.....I live in KY and am thankful for WV and Miss. educational level of attainment.

Proponents of the BCS system (or any other system that is not a playoff) claim that the current system makes the regular season that much more important and each game more significant. This is what it really does; it waters down non conference competition so that no team will risk playing more than one "quality opponent" outside of their conference schedule in any given season.

If Georgia Tech knew that if they won the coastal division of the ACC, which then led to an ACC Championship game, which then led to an 8 team seeded playoff, then there would be no fear of playing Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, or any other team that might actually be compelling and 'money' making during the regular season.

You can't blame GT for playing the scheduling game the same way everyone else does. You have to blame the system.

Let me get this straight. The Rambling Wreck is wary of facing mighty Middle Tennessee State on a mere five days rest, preferring to play someone like Delaware State on that date. What an admission! Run your knickers up the flagpole, ladies!
