Iowa hires Greg Davis as offensive coordinator

While the decision had been hinted at and rumored for over a week, Iowa officially announced on Monday that it had hired Greg Davis to be Kirk Ferentz's new offensive coordinator.

"We are thrilled to have Greg Davis join our staff" said Ferentz in a statement. "Greg has enjoyed great success during his career and I believe that can be attributed directly to the combination of his football expertise and teaching skills.

"Greg's units have demonstrated impressive production and they have done so using a variety of systems and styles - he has done an outstanding job of playing towards the strengths and abilities of the players with which he has worked."

Davis took the 2011 season off, but was last seen coaching at Texas where he'd been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for 13 seasons before being replaced by Bryan Harsin last year following a 5-7 campaign in 2010. While at Texas Davis helped put together a national championship winning team in 2005 and played a pivotal role in the development of quarterbacks like Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Chris Simms.

He will be only the second offensive coordinator at Iowa since Kirk Ferentz took over the program in 1999. Davis replaces Ken O'Keefe who left Iowa to take a job with the Miami Dolphins earlier this month.

Iowa hires Greg Davis as offensive coordinator

Unfortunately, your foot belongs in your mouth once again SWIHawk.  Hear are your specific words from your earlier remark that I based my former post and link on:  "Besides, between Coach Davis, and Hayden Fry, the Texas to Iowa recruiting pipeline is once again flowing at full capacity."  Your statement DOES NOT imply to future recruiting and DOES imply to a recruiting of Texas that "IS" 'once again flowing at full capacity.'  So take your own advice and "Get a life" because your weak spinning of words are feeble.  No where in your previous comment did you direct any comment to the future recruiting.  Proofread before you post and you will probably get a better response.

Thanks for the kind words, FatTony ~ biomotor, I'm well aware of how few Texans are on the Iowa squad.  My comment was in reference to the excellent Texas recruiting during the Hayden Fry years (1979-98), and the future recruiting years that Coach Davis will provide; he's only been hired for eight hours, and you're adding up Iowa's recruiting score?  Get a life.

Iowa hires Greg Davis as offensive coordinator

As a Texas fan, I am thrilled with this news.  I don't think Davis was fantastic, but I think he is a solid hire.  I wish him the best.  I think new surroundings will give him his edge back.  Congrats on the hire.   I think you will like it.

Upon inspection of such a claim I see that Iowa has no 2013 recruits from Texas (or anywhere for that matter).  A whopping one recruit from Texas last year and three the year before....the pipeline looks all dried up to me!  ROTF!!!!

Coach Davis doesn't have to prove anything to anybody!  When they won the National Championship, Mack Brown was singing the praises of Coach Davis, and then when things when south Brown throws him under the bus.  Now, Coach Davis will have the opportunity to work for a Head Coach who SUPPORTS his staff, and will work together to achieve the common goal.

Greg Davis is an excellent fit for both Coach Ferentz, and the Iowa Hawkeyes.  True, Jim Harbaugh would have been a better selection, but he's busy doing something else at the moment.  Besides, between Coach Davis, and Hayden Fry, the Texas to Iowa recruiting pipeline is once again flowing at full capacity.  Go Hawks!

Greg Davis will do just fine at Iowa.  During his tenure at Texas he accomplished many great offensive achievements.  However, he had some really good QB's in his offensive schemes.  Simms/Applewhite, VY, and McCoy can make a bland and vanilla offense look really good.  When GD did not have the QB to pull his offensive scheme out of the fire the true nature of this offense showed.  It certainly is not all GD's fault....but a large part of the offensive woes were.  The talent at the QB position is key...as with most all offenses....Texas struck out with Garrett Gilbert and have paid dearly for it.  An overall lack of talent is certainly not the case...there is talent and good coaches at Texas.  But when you strike out at such a crucial position and you do not have the offense to compensate (lack of a running game) your in trouble (as would be any team that lacked a running game).  The lack of a running game lost over the years in Greg Davis' offense is the reason he "retired" from Texas.  I honestly believe GD will do good things at Iowa.  As far as Texas goes they will bounce back that is a fact.  Muschamp will win at Florida to higher degree than Iowa....that's a fact.

seems to me that texas sucked the following year he left too. maybe its not your bubble screen guy after all but YOUR COACH, texas fans. or maybe its the lack of talent on your team? didnt your other prize coordinator, the one that got away, that was supposed to be the heir apparent to your head coach suck after he left too? had to win a bowl game to avoid being the first losing coach in some 20 or 30 years. muschamp was supposed to be the one and he looks dazed and confused at best. maybe the coach you ran out was the scapegoat?

My God! Things just keep getting better in the Iowa's football future. Who knows? The Hawkeyes may actually get a 4th place finish in the Leader's Division. Or is it the Legend's? No matter! Greg Davis will be sure to inject that spark in the otherwise anemic offense that will result in another stint as a Big 10 also-ran.
