Welcome to the Bracketology blog, a new blog here at  I'll be posting here mostly with regard to how some of the news may impact the tournament selection process, and try to answer as many questions as I can.

To celebrate, a new bracket projection has been posted .  We're barely a quarter of the way through the season, and have yet to get into conference play, so teams haven't really established much in terms of tournament resumes yet.  There is a lot of how good we think they are vs how accomplished they actually are.  Especially for the big schools, accomplishment tends to come much more in league than out.

Certainly though, there have been surprises.  Michigan St, a preseason top five team, is really struggling against better teams.  Connecticut, picked for around 10th in the Big East, is now in the top 10 nationally.

I went ahead and put every undefeated team in the bracket, even Cincinnati and Northwestern, who still have pretty horrible RPIs for teams without losses.  Gonzaga and Butler are in the process of playing their way out of at-large consideration, if they need it.

Anyway, take this bracket for what an early December bracket is worth.  My brackets are always "as if the season ended today."  I can pretty much guarantee the bracket will be very different in March.

At least Ohio St didn't make this first in-season bracket look totally stupid tonight, but they sure gave it a good try.

As a jayhawk who has watched everyone of their games,  I will say that Arizona has been the best team we have played this year. (No disrespect to Memphis...they have more talent but are raw) The game was close and KU had their hands full with Williams.  He is a beast and was by far the best player on the court that night.  He just needs to be more consistent.  Arizona will no doubt be in the tourney this year.  With a little better guard play, I believe they could contend in an otherwise somewhat ordinary but solid Pac-10.

OK, so the old man spelled break wrong. when you are 80 you are allowed a bit of sway in your actions. Giving a little idea of who "another era" is. He has been up and down the campus a few more times than most of you. Remember, I went to Marquette when Marquette played football and was in the inaugural Cotton Bowl. Lost to a team called Texas Christian University, now better known as TCU.

As a good friend of mine used to say: give the kid a brake. Yes it's early in the season but name one of us who REALLY does not want to know what the sports gurus say about who will be there in March. Having said that also tell me who of us are not more expert than the experts. The only problem is that they have that day job, you don't. Keep up the great work, Jerry. If everyone agrees with you you will soon have to get another day joib.

Really, drps?  I didn't think I had to state the obvious, but clearly you don't get it.  The fact is, it's so early in the season that at least half of the teams in Palm's bracket haven't beaten anybody.  What's interesting to me is how a team like Miami is an 8 seed in his bracket when they're 6-2, have a 16-pt loss to Rutgers and the only semi-decent team they've beaten is West Virginia, and they're not the team they were the last several years.  Or how about Texas, which is sporting a 6-2 record that includes a 17-pt loss to Southern Cal and can only claim UVA as an even half-decent win.  Most puzzling is NC State at 4-3.  Their wins came against Tennessee Tech, East Carolina, George Mason and Fairleigh Dickinson and their lost includes a 39-point debacle against Wisconsin.  If this bracket is based on "if the season ended today", how in the hell does NC State get in? In fact, how any of the teams I've mentioned get in, and get in fairly easily based on Palm's seeding, and how UA doesn't is a mystery to me.

And drps, I wasn't asking why Va Tech didn't make the Dance last year, but it probably had as much to do with them losing 5 of their final 9 as anything else.

I hope you're not as stupid as you seem and that you do, in fact, realize that Arizona's exclusion from this bracket has nothing to do with not having beaten anybody, because the majority of the teams in this bracket haven't beaten anybody after 8-9 games.  But, if it makes you feel more grown up calling somebody a "little girl", go for it.

Why we are all on here arguing about a seed/bracket that means nothing in December is beyond me...even these "braketologists" cannot get it right a day before the real brakets are announced.

As for the AZ team, they are still young and working with the worst PG they've had at PGU since Lute's first year.  Irregardless of wether DWill goes pro, next year should be Cats year.  This year there will be turbulence in the air from time to time (like before 8 mins remaining against Fullerton).  Enjoy a young team maturing, and a coach who is rebuilding a power...don't worry about some stupid December fantasy bracket.

We need to give Palm a bit of leniency.  It is early and it is always tough to watch Pac 10 games because they are on so late.  Arizona will be in the next bracket after this or lose at BYU.  The KU game was only 8 because Zona was fouling at the end of the was back and forth throughout and Zona was up before Williams fouled out.  KU was the better team though.  I am disappointed with our schedule this year, but we have utterly destroyed everyone on that schedule.  Wash St is very good as well...maybe even better than AZ.  They whipped Gonzaga and the Kansas St game could have gone either way.  UCLA may be the 4th team in.  They need to make up for that letdown against Montana though.  I think Palm needs to take a closer look at the ACC.  I just do not see many tourney teams.  It's Duke then who really?  Mediocre teams who can lose on any given night.  The ACC is just down this year.

Purdue and Oakland are allowed to be on the same side of the bracket.  They are supposed to bracket teams to avoid first or second round regular season rematches, but even that is more of a guideline than a hard-and-fast rule.

Hosh - good points but no worries Wink by mid year people will be going "where did Arizona come from?" At the end of the year we be serving notice the vacation is over and Arizona is back to one of the top teams in the country. This time around I see us staying there longer as Sean does something that Coach O didn't do too much of, play defense. It may be Point Gaurd U but its not just a shooters team anymore. Cool

Purdue a 7 seed?  And Oakland the 14 in the same side?  You are violating drunk bracketing procedures.... I mean bracketing procedure... whooops? I hope you do better in the future and avoid basic errors... even if you insist on underrating the boilermakers.
