January 18 Bracket - Changes at the Top

A new bracket is available again this morning.

There is a change at the top.  Losses by Duke and Syracuse have dropped them down from the top line.  They have been replaced by Pitt, which beat the Orange on Monday, and San Diego State.

There is actually a case for Syracuse to keep that fourth spot.  Certainly, its loss to Pittsburgh is better than the Panthers' loss to Tennessee in Pittsburgh (but not on their home floor).  The Orange were also without their leading scorer, Kris Joseph, which is something the committee would consider.  However, Pitt has a better collection of wins (4 top 20 teams), so for now, the Panthers rate a slight edge.

Arizona cracked the top 25 of the coaches poll this week because of a gaudy record and a name program, but the Wildcats have only just barely cracked the bottom of my bracket.  They have only three top 100 wins, all at home against teams not a threat to make the bracket as at-large teams.  They also managed to lose to one of the worst teams in a major conference, Oregon State.  It's a very similar profile to Florida State's, despite a big RPI difference.  FSU is 67th and Arizona is 28th.  The biggest difference is that the Seminoles played a handful of 200-250 RPI teams, while Arizona played several in the 150-200 range.  Those two are bracketed to play each other in the First Four.

Purdue and Washington are teams that are not living up to their rankings.  The Boilers lost twice on the road last week, although they did manage to pick up a their first top 50 RPI win of the season.  Valparaiso, which Purdue beat back in December, has crawled up to 49th.  Purdue was competitive in both losses at Minnesota and West Virginia, but it's about time for the Boilers to start racking up quality wins.

Fortunately for them, they're in the Big Ten, where they get a chance at quality wins pretty much ever week.  Washington isn't as lucky.  Although the Pac 10 isn't quite as bad as it was a year ago, there is still only two top 50 RPI teams, the Huskies and Arizona.  Also, Washington didn't pick up any quality non-conference wins (Portland at home is the best), which means it's tougher to build a case for a good seed, or if things go a little badly, selection.

who wants to reward mediocrity
Funny. Doesn't every mid-major school have a  medicore tournament resume, or a MORE mediocre tournament resume than the teams that barely make don't make the tournament?  Thought so.

There are good schools. But some conferences flat out suck. Didn't the SWAC's best team have a losing record or a .500 record a couple of years ago, and yet, that team go into the NCAA Tourney and got their asses kicked?  That's what RUINS the tourney.

Maybe if they want to make the tourney and get respect they should stack their non-conference schedule with great schools?

that is a retarded comment...what makes the tournament so much fun is giving these small schools a chance to compete and every year some make some noise...on any given night a lot of these schools can give even the best schools a fight.  who wants to reward mediocrity.  If you can't finish .500 in league you arent that good.  All the major conference teams already never play road games, don't play any good mid major when they do play them...so there conference is only way to judge them.  When you get 15 chances to beat a good team most likely you are going to soon or later.

the tournament is good the way it is as it represents every school.  i dont mind 7 or 8 teams from major conferences getting in but they have to be dserving.  Not just well we played a tough schedule, get a new argument and win some games.

bottom line if u dont have a .500 record in league you dont belong simple as that.

Like the other posters have said, Pitt and Syracuse have a much better overall resume.
Yeah. But unfortunately some teams that have better resumes than the mid major schools with crappy resume's will have to miss out on the fun of the NCAA Tournament because of the stupid automatic bid rule. It's ashame that teams have to barely miss out on the tourney to teams that haven't beaten anyone this year but their own crappy conference opponents with medicore talent.

I hope SDSU drops out of the polls if they lose.

So sick of their stupid fans talking about their stupid teams.

Again, where is the PROOF that this team is good.

unless Duke and/or the Big 10/ Big EAST fall!!!!  Highly unlikely but definately possible!!!!

Maybe SDSU falls.......either way they don't HAVE TO PLAY Duke, Big 10, or the Big EAST!!!!

Maybe they will play Tx or KU!!!!  Maybe not!!!  We will just have to wait and see!!!  That is way they play the game!!!

Let's Talk Schedules Shall We!!!!

Before we talk about who has the toughest schedule or not let's not forget the HORNS schedule!!!  So far they have only 3 losses (one against Pitt in the championship game of the 2K classic tourney by 2 pt ,another road game by 17 pts to a very good USC squad that has some impressive wins thus far, and the last against UConn by 1 pt at home but still very respectable IMO!!!  Both Pitt and UConn were and still are top 10 teams!!!  When it comes to their wins you find Illinois, Michigan State, North Carolina, and tonight Tx A&M (Spartan and Tar Heel wins were on the road and back to back) 3 of which were top 20 at the time of defeat!!!  They still have #2 Kansas on the road saturday, and then OSU on the road, Top 20 Missouri at home, then home and aways with Baylor, K State, and on the road against Tx A&M!!!   This schedule (be it in conference games left) is a very brutal one!!!  They strummed Arkansas (SEC) by 33 pts. and have now held two conference foes to their teams lowest point totals of the year!!!  Texas has shown it can match Pitt, UConn, Illinois, M State, N Carolina, and now Tx A&M!!!  If they had 10 more seconds could have won the Pitt/ UConn matchups!!! They are as complete a team and/ or as deep a team as you will find!!!  This team is indeed a dangerous team to face ask A&M!!!! Nathan Walkup stated "We got punked tonight" and anyone watching the game would probably agree and they are/ were a projected 3 seed so far!!!  Go figure!!!  With a win at Kansas saturday they could crack the top 5!!!!  We can only watch and pray!!!!  I am not saying they have the toughest schedule but it will be one of them come selection time!!!!

January 18 Bracket - Changes at the Top

Doesn't matter if SDSU gets a number 1 seed.  They'll have to play Duke and the Big East and the Big Ten one way or another.  No backing in to the title game like college football.
