Prior to joining the College Basketball Blog here on CBS, I was the founder of KentuckySportsRadio.com, which focused exclusively on all things involving Kentucky basketball. As a spinoff of that gig, I host a local television show in Lexington and Louisville on the topic of Kentucky basketball as I help the Big Blue Nation obsess on all things Wildcats. Yesterday on the show, former UK player Mark Krebs gave a candid interview on his experiences with former Kentucky and Texas A&M Coach Billy Gillispie , whom Krebs played under for two seasons in Lexington. During his time in Lexington, there were many rumors of poor player treatment by Gillispie and suggestions that during his tenure, players were forced to play with injuries and verbally abused on a daily basis.

Krebs addressed a number of those issues in the interview and told a story of a Coach at a top program slowly losing the respect of his players and ultimately, control of the program. His comments include a story of Gillispie kicking his star Jodie Meeks off of the team at halftime of a game and refusing to allow the Wildcats to warm-up before the team's embarassing loss to Gardner-Webb. It is a must-watch for anyone who wonders what happens when "Coaches Go Wild":

Nicely done, tho as a Cat fan never like to air our dirty laundry. Truth hurts. We have however corrected that mistake in judgement.

Let it go people. Billy Gillispie is not the Kentucky coach now. Nothing to see here. Whatever camp you're in as far as old school coaches like Bobby Knight that mentally, verbally, and even sometimes (in Knights case) physically abuse everyone in their path. Clearly the Kentucky job was too much for Gillispie, hence the drinking. Even Calipari, (for all his faults that UK fans get castigated for here day and night it seems and is apparently the closest man made for the UK job) has stated that the Kentucky job is like a coat...it wears you. You can't simply take it off.

Gillispie served his purpose. He was the interim coach that took over after Tubby Smith left town with three or four million in his pocket after negotiating with the University of Minnesota for the entire 2007 season and intentionally recruiting down because he was pissed off over UK's nepotism rule they wouldn't change so he could hire Saul as an assistant. (Or told to find a "soft" landing)

Simply said nobody wanted to follow Smith. UK contacted Billy Donovan that waffled the decision like he was debating eggs over pancakes before he most probably pulled the plug on the offer at Pitino's behest after two weeks of misleading Barnhart and Kentucky that he was actually interested in the job.

In the end UK got the better of it. Calipari. Enough said. He's a better recruiter and a better coach. Billy G. would do well in a mid major program where he can recruit kids that would've been or could've been five star recruits if they'd had a better work ethic....not coaching elite talent like a John Wall or Demarcus Cousins. He can't relate to those kids. But give him a team full of two and three star recruits at a school where he's not under the microscope and he'll flourish like before at Texas A&M or UTEP.

Great job, Matt.  At KSR, I was always impressed with your resources and your knowledge of information not printed by news sources that follow Kentucky basketball.  You will go far, young man, and I will enjoy following you.  It is sad Billy Clyde treated the players that way.  It does remind me of Bobby Knight.  They are abusive individuals and should not head coaches.  An assistant position would probably suit Billy Clyde better.  I am glad Bobby Knight no longer coaches and continue to be confused why the press treats Knight so well.  Like Billy Clyde, he probably ruined as much talent as he abusively nutured.  Good luck with your new stint at CBS Sportsline.  I will alway follow stories.

This is ridiculous! To think that any coach (especially in the present) would treat others this way is appalling. For those who defend this kind of boorish behavior or the likes of a Bob Knight because they are "old school" is stupid. This isn't the 1950's. I had some tough "old school" coaches in my youth (I'm 46) but none of them ever disrespected us as young men like this type of behavior. I understand that Gillispie has a drinking problem. If he does a 12 step recovery, I sincerely hope he makes amends with these guys and any others he abused as a coach. I can't imagine that he will have any Division 1 jobs in the near future. He's going to have to rebuild his reputation and demonstrate that he has changed his ways before some AD gives him a shot. I doubt he will ever work for a program as significant as Kentucky ever again.
