One of the most heralded recruits to ever sign to play at Missouri will not be able to take the court for the Tigers this season.

Tony Mitchell, a 6-8, 220-pound power forward from Dallas has been ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA, and according to the organization, Missouri will no longer appeal the decision. In a press release , NCAA spokesman Kevin Lennon said that Mitchell was initially ruled ineligible on Jan. 5 and then the university then appealed to the Division I Initial Eligibility Waiver Committee, which upheld the staff decision on Jan 13.

After presenting the NCAA "new evidence" of Mitchell's potential eligibility, the Committee met again, and determined that it had no impact on its original decision.

According to Lennon, the issue for Mitchell is one of academic eligibility and the decision upholds the NCAA's determination that all prospective student-athletes must be "academically prepared" to become eligible upon entering college. While no specifics were given by the NCAA as to what Mitchell's transcript lacked, previous reports have suggested that Mitchell lacked the necessary number of core class in order to play Division I basketball.

The loss is a huge blow to Missouri's team, but the result has been expected for some time. It isn't clear whether Mitchell will choose to remain at Missouri, although CBS Sports's Seth Davis has said that he doesn't believe Mitchell will ever play NCAA basketball .

This could turn out to be not true, though; the Denton Record-Chronicle is reporting this afternoon that Mitchell is in the process of trying to enroll at the University of North Texas. It remains unclear how likely Mitchell is to be accepted into the school. But if he was, he'd be eligible for the second half of the team's 2011-12 season.

Mizzou's Mitchell ineligible; North Texas-bound?

Mafoya,
Can you answer him?  You made the statement, he's just asking you to back it up.  We all defend our positions on the boards, even Paul4Cats tries sometimes, if you want to throw out a statement contrary to popular opinion you should be able to defend it.

Mizzou's Mitchell ineligible; North Texas-bound?

The way I understand it, he would only be eligible for the second half of the 2011-12 season if he could have passing grades (2.0 GPA???) in the first semester.  Sure he could have done that at Mizzou, but not on any kind of a scholarship.  So $3800 with no additional housing costs is much easier for him to scrape up than $6000 plus housing is.  Makes sense.

Well, as a Mizzou fan, this blows, but the NCAA doesn't help THEIR case of being credible here.  How exactly can he play for North Texas if he can't play for Mizzou? I don't think he'll play a minute of college ball.  He will play overseas somewhere for a couple years and work on his game, and get drafted to the NBA.  From what I've seen from this kid, he's only a year or two away from the NBA anyway...

Mizzou's Mitchell ineligible; North Texas-bound?

I understand that, but it doesn't explain the last statement in the article that says "But if he was, he'd be eligible for the second half of the team's 2011-12 season."

Exactly! The rumdumb isn't going to any college to get an education. Playing hoops is his only chance for the big $$$.

Mizzou's Mitchell ineligible; North Texas-bound?

The question isn't one of whether Mitchell could enroll at Mizzou, it is whether or not he meets the minimum requirements to participate as an NCAA athlete. The NCAA said "no" therefore Mitchell won't be playing basketball at Mizzou, a condition of his earning a scholarship at the school. Since out-of-state tuition for a Texas resident at Mizzou would run $19,592, its less expensive for him to stay in his native Texas where a year at North Texas would only cost $7,000.
