Court to be named in Gary Williams' honor

A no-brainer.

During his farewell press conference Friday afternoon, Gary Williams and the rest of the world was informed by Maryland president Wallace Loh that the school intends on naming the court at the Comcast Center after the 66-year-old coach. Williams coached at Maryland for 22 years and was heralded for bringing the school its only national championship, in addition to taking the job in 1989, when it was tangled in sanctions and punishments.

"In the coming weeks, I will join Kevin Anderson in accepting his recommendation and recommending to the board of regents of this university that this basketball court be named for Gary Williams," Loh said.

Having a court named after you is an honor in college coaching. Mike Krzyzewski and Bobby Cremins are the only other ACC coaches with their names on the court. It's a shame this treatment couldn't have come to Williams when he was coaching; he deserved it. The fact is, very few coaches get the treat of patrolling the sidelines with their names painted on the hardwood before them. Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim are two men who have such an honor. No matter, Williams will remain an adviser at Maryland and will no doubt be a present figure in the years ahead, even if he's no longer coaching.

Some university approval and red tape needs to be cleared before this can happen, but expectations are the face of the Comcast Center's court will have "Gary Williams Court" on it by some time next season.

Court to be named in Gary Williams' honor

I wish they would name it honor of our former A.D. Kevin Anderson who has annihilated Maryland athletics in only 5 months.  FIRE THIS JERK before he moves us to the Big South Conference.

Court to be named in Gary Williams' honor

Technically, Williams is the fourth ACC coach to be so honored. North Carolina didn't bother to name its court after Dean Smith because the Heels kind of named the building after him.

Court to be named in Gary Williams' honor

This is a well deserved honor and a great move by Maryland administrators. Gary did a great job at Maryland and will always be remembered as the coach that took the Terps to the top of the college basketball mountain in 2002. Hopefully, he will soon be able to share his insights on the college game as a TV analyst in the near future.
