The honeymoon period for new UNLV head coach Dave Rice is over.

Chace Stanback was arrested Friday in Las Vegas on suspicion of DUI. Stanback was in Vegas for the start of summer classes.

“We do know that there was an incident, and we are trying to determine what happened and what transpired,” Rice said Monday morning, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

Stanback is the leading returning scorer and rebounder for the Runnin’ Rebels, who lose guards Tre’Von Willis and Derrick Jasper from last year’s NCAA tournament team.

The 6-foot-8 small forward averaged 13.0 points and 5.9 rebounds last season. He began his career at UCLA, but transferred to UNLV following his freshman campaign in Los Angeles.

Rice took over at head coach for the Rebels after Lon Kruger left in early April for Oklahoma. He had previously been the associate coach at BYU, joining the Cougars' staff in 2005. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at UNLV, serving under four different head coaches.

His disciplinary tactics will be tested with Stanback, who was suspended for one game last season for academic reasons.

Chace Stanback arrested on suspicion of DUI

steve, that's a pretty ignorant statement to make.  I'm sure that you never had 1 too many drinks in college, or this year even, and hopped into the car.  Or maybe gotten into the car with someone else who chose to do so.  Either way, it doesn't matter.  I agree that Chace made a bad choice, but closing a college due to one athlete's bad judgement?  Hmm, okay.  If we closed every institution where any employee or individual made a poor choice, our entry country would be shut down.

The guy had a lapse in judgement, got caught, and will now have to suffer the consequences.

Don't worry, UNLV is not from a power conference so the NCAA probably will intervene.  Funny how that works.  Players from the MWC, WAC, MAC, Conference USA need to be controlled not only by their own schools, but by the NCAA as well.  No, I don't condone breaking the law or drunk driving.  And, if the state of Nevada leaves this as a misdemeanor, I think the school should discipline this player, not ruin his life, but force him to do some sort of public service on his campus and miss a couple of games for violating terms of his scholarship.

If this player played for a team in the Pac-12, he would probably be given college credit for his transgression.  If he was in the Big East nobody would care,it was just a youthful indiscretion.  The Big-10 would condemn him for not making a profit off of his illegal transgressions and in the Big-12 and SEC regions, the arresting officer will be threatened with termination for proseuting an obviously innocent athlete.

What a surprise that another UNLV player is in trouble or the school for that matter. Sorry but the NCAA has to stop this crazyness at UNLV and just close this sorry program once and for all or this will always happen like usually.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out, and how Rice responds to this.  To me, it's definitely not as bad as the offseason situation last year, but still one that will likely result in at least some suspension.
